There is the possibility to start Windows with a live CD, as it happens for linux distributions, in order to use it without loading or installing anything on disk "> Linux Puppy, which works very well by installing it on the stick and which also allows you to save the data of the various sessions. Windows Live CDs are far less common.
As mentioned above, there are two ways of creating a Windows Live CD (including Windows 10):
- Using the system to use Windows 10 as a portable system on a USB stick with Windows To Go, which I mentioned in another article.
- Using the special version of Windows, Windows PE we are talking about even now.
We have already written what Windows PE is, which is used to restore installations of Windows, which can be used to prepare the installation on corporate PCs and which is particularly useful for recovering data from a computer that no longer starts.
To create a live CD with Windows we need the AOMEI PE Builder program, which makes the creation of a CD or USB of a Windows PE version to be used live on any computer very simple and advantageous.
This program is convenient because it works on old and new PCs, on PCs with Legacy BIOS or UEFI, because it includes network support (which Windows PE would not have) and because it allows you to customize the Windows system by adding files or drivers.
It takes no more than half an hour and there is absolutely no need to be an expert system administrator.
Aomei PE Builder is a free program that allows you to create a Windows PE disk in a simple and automatic way, without having to have the original Windows disk and without having to use other programs.
The program is compatible with Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and also with Windows 10 and Windows Server versions.
If you create a Windows PE disk, it can then be used to restart any version of Windows.
Aomei PE Builder allows you to create this computer boot disk with Windows PE and all the tools you want inside.
In addition to those already present, files, portable programs and drivers can be added to the installation environment .
For example, it may make sense to include a portable browser and a portable antivirus scanner.
To create the disk or USB drive, then simply follow the wizard.
From AOMEI PE Builder you can directly download the images of Windows 10, Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 in Windows PE version.
You can then create the USB stick, the CD or simply save the ISO file, without having to make special configurations.
You can then restart the PC, choose to start the computer from a USB stick or from CD (see how to change the boot order of the computer in the bios) and then load the PC with this special version of Windows PE, live and without loading from the internal computer disk.

In case you want to try it on a virtual pc (which by now we should know how it works), you can use Virtual Box by starting it from that Live CD.
