Enable system restore points in Windows 10

If you have installed Windows 10 on a new PC or after doing the update, there are a few options to be changed immediately to optimize the system, activate the most important functions and deactivate the useless ones.
Among these, a very important one is to reactivate the creation of system configuration restore points, the historical function of Windows that is used to return the PC to its previous state, in case of sudden problems.
If, for example, after installing a program or after changing some options, the system is unstable, missing something or if you receive errors, you can try to restore the configuration of the day before, when everything worked fine.
This is a quick way of solving small daily problems without having to waste time researching the problem.
We talked about this in the guide on how to restore the system configuration if the Windows PC does not work today .

System restore in Windows 10 is turned off by default and must be turned on again.
This I think is due to the fact that this recovery option is considered by Microsoft to be old and not too efficient, replaced, in the intentions, by the file history that allows you to recover previous versions of the modified files and by the " reset PC " which is found in the settings, to the update and security section.
However, resetting the PC reset option is much more radical, almost a reinstallation that removes apps and programs.
The classic system recovery, on the other hand, is a light and simple operation, which can be done without danger and without deleting anything.
Therefore, on a Windows 10 PC, I recommend activating system restore for at least the main disk.
Then open the Control Panel, go to System and then to the Advanced System Settings .
In the " system protection " tab you will find the list of installed disks and an indication of whether protection is enabled or disabled.
Then select the system disk, press the Configure button and then on the Activate option.
The maximum storage space to devote to system recovery depends on the size of the disk in use.
Generally, a value between 5 and 10 GB is used.
Click on Apply and then OK to finish.
Now, when necessary, you can go to the system protection screen and press the Reset button choosing the date on which the computer certainly worked well.
Note that system restore would not be recommended on PCs with SSD disk, although I personally keep it active as it has saved me the situation more than once over the years.
