Solve Laptop Cooling Problems

For laptops, summer is really a bad time, because if they are not well kept or carried around a lot, they cannot cool down as they should accumulate too much heat which also risks damaging them. The first symptom of overheating is represented, in addition to the excessive heat that is felt by touching it under the keyboard, by the noise of the fans running at maximum .
Therefore, some precautions must be taken to solve any laptop cooling problems, not only by making sure that the fans work properly, but also by trying not to overload the computer by making it work at high cycles for prolonged periods of time. In more urgent cases and for older laptops, it is also possible to add cooling fans to the PC, so you can rest easy with overheating issues and run the laptop fans normally.

1) Clean the fans

Keeping the fans clean is essential for their proper functioning in cooling the processor and other computer components. Dust is a big enemy of laptops, because if the air vents are blocked the fans try to turn faster than necessary making more noise and consuming more energy. Cleaning the laptop from dust can be done using a can of compressed air to blow air into the openings and remove the dust. Ideally and if possible (not all laptops can do this), it would be better to do this cleaning by removing the back panel of the laptop, in order to clean all the dirt accumulated over time.

2) Close some programs

If your PC is clean, but you can hear the fans spinning hard, your computer may be under stress due to the programs you are using. If you use the laptop in a particularly hot environment, also to save on battery consumption, it is always advisable to use a maximum of two or three programs together, not more.
You can use the Windows Task Manager (which you can open by pressing the CTRL-Shift-Esc keys together) to determine which programs are taking up the most memory and CPU . In Windows 10 it is also possible to see the electrical consumption of each process, which if it is high leads to accumulate more heat.

3) Check for malware

If the computer is clean and the fans run at maximum speed even if nothing is being done, after checking with the task manager for any unknown software running in the background as seen in the previous point, it is better to do an antimalware scan using the antivirus installed or better yet, with one of the best free antimalware programs.

4) Use energy saving

A very simple way to keep your computer cooler is to decrease the maximum CPU power by changing the energy plan from Maximum Performance to Energy Saving . To do this, go to the Windows Control Panel from the Start menu, then open the Hardware and Sound> Power Options section . You can then choose the Balanced performance plan or, by clicking on Show additional combinations, use the Energy Saver .

5) Use SpeedFan

With some programs it is possible to adjust the fan speed. As seen in the guide on how to manage the PC fans for better cooling, it is possible to download Speedfan, perhaps the best of the programs to control the speeds of the internal fans and, if desired, also to adjust them (even if you have to be careful to do it in the way correct if you do not want to avoid overheating).

6) Keep the laptop raised

This is a rather obvious basic advice: since the PC fans are located at the bottom, it will be enough to keep the computer raised to give more space for the air to pass through it. On Amazon you can buy an adjustable ventilated base for laptops for 15 Euros.
Obviously, you should never use the laptop by resting it on a carpet, on the bed, on the sofa or on your legs if you do not want to overheat it immediately and this is a rule that always applies, not only in hot weather.

7) Connect a laptop cooler

Those who use the laptop at home or in the office could find a definitive solution to cooling problems by buying a base with additional fans on which to place the computer . The cooling bases promote greater air circulation by cooling the inside of the laptop and relieving the pressure exerted on the integrated fans.
They are cheap and detachable devices, such as the TopMate cooling base that can be bought on Amazon for only 20 Euros.
