Many people today do not use their home telephone because they may perhaps go to live in houses without a telephone connection or because they prefer to use their mobile phone only to make and receive calls. Modern internet services, however, allow you to activate landline numbers for any part of the world, both American and Italian. Activating the fixed SIP number with local prefix (06 for Rome, 02 for Milan etc.) means being able to use the service to receive free calls on your computer or even on your mobile phone or smartphone if connected to the internet.
SIP (which does not stand for the Italian Society for Telephone Operations) is the network protocol used by VOIP telephony programs.
In this article we see both how to activate an Italian landline number that allows you to receive calls on your mobile phone or computer, and how to activate a US number that can become useful for talking and receiving calls from the United States or to use American Voip telephone services. All this for free, without any risk of spending money.

In Italy, there are at least two excellent free online services that allow you to activate an Italian landline and local number .
One is Messagenet which requires a quick registration to the site and which, currently (2013) is the best solution to Activate a SIP landline number to register an Italian landline number for free to be called at home or on your mobile
The other is provided by Orchestra CloudItalia (ex Eutelia Voip ) which will be explained in this article.
To register a number on CloudItalia, just go to the site, press on " Activate Now " and fill in all fields with real data. During the registration phase, you need to be careful not to put the check mark under " Send notification message with sms ". The local prefix depends on the choice of the city so, if you write Rome, you will get a number with the 06 .
Once registration is complete, you can press the " Confirm " button and wait for the verification email to be sent to your mailbox.
By clicking the link on the message received from CloudItalia, you can activate the service by choosing your new SIP landline number . As you will notice, it will also be possible to choose to register a phone number from another country or city.
At the end an email will arrive with the Clouditalia connection parameters that can be used to configure any SIP client on a PC or mobile phone.
With the activation of an Eutelia Italian SIP phone number it is possible to receive calls and calls on your mobile phone .
The person who calls will have to call the landline number while the person who receives the phone call from a mobile phone will have to activate an internet connection (3G or wireless) and install a SIP client .
For Android smartphones, the Zoiper IAX SIP VOIP Softphone application works well, free and without advertising.
For iPhone you can use the Clouditalia app, Simfonia
A PC program that supports the SIP protocol and can receive phone calls on the computer with CloudItalia is Zoipier for PC or even X-Lite.
Programs such as VoipStunt or other services for making computer-to-cell phone calls can also be used to receive calls on the computer.
Also remembering that it is possible to obtain a fixed and local number for free to receive phone calls on Skype, I would say that, when you go abroad, to call a friend who is traveling in other countries or to communicate with the normal telephone with those who are in the United States, we can save a lot of money.
Appendix: You can also activate a US phone number (but the procedure is no longer possible now).
- Register on the CallCentric.com site by filling in the required fields and click on continue.
Callcentric sends a confirmation email to verify the email address with a link that leads to the choice of the American city whose phone number you want.
Since we are not in the United States, you can put any country, accept the terms and then press " sign up ".
After skipping the presentation of the service, choose My Callcentric and note, on the left, the SIP number starting with 1777 .
- Now you have to open a new browser tab and navigate to the ipkall.com site (which no longer works. Set the type of account as SIP and paste the Callcentric number, taken earlier, where SIP Username is written.
As host name, type in.callcentric.com and choose the same email address and password used when setting up the Callcentric account.
Check your e-mail box now to receive an ipkall.com Email with the new local phone number.
- The US landline number has been registered but must be activated.
Download and install Express Talk on your computer.
Even if it is a trial version, it only serves to activate the number obtained before.
Make sure not to install any of the "optional components" during the installation and proceed with the default configuration by always pressing " Next ".
When you get to " SIP Setup ", choose " Yes, I already have a SIP account ", click on Next and then fill in the fields with the same values used for ipkall.com.
Once the installation is finished, go back to the Callcentric page, update it and note on the left the writing: " your phone is registered " or "The phone is registered".
