Navigaweb is not a site where you can find Linux guides, but you cannot completely ignore the Linux topic when it comes to alternative operating systems to be used on netbooks or old laptops to make them come back as fast and usable as ever. For this reason we like to talk about the lightest and easiest to use Linux distributions, those that can be installed on any computer and that do not need to become experts of this different operating system.
After talking about Peppermint, Easypeasy, Puppy Linux and Lubuntu we now see another version that deserves to be tried: Elementary OS .
Elementary OS Loki is the latest version of this distribution that makes simplicity and design its workhorses.

It is a complete operating system, beautiful to look at, elegant and excellent for having a better Linux experience, obviously also in Italian.
Elementary OS Loki is based on Ubuntu with some modifications and a nice graphic theme.
Elementary OS is a version of Linux designed for beginners of this operating system, made so that you can do all the tasks and various operations without having to change too much the approach of traditional Windows or Mac PCs.
Elementary OS Loki allows you to manage applications and programs without having to worry about changing particular configurations or settings and, just this, it seems a system suitable for everyone, even Linux newbies .
Elementary OS Loki uses the apt package manager and each program can be downloaded and installed from the Ubuntu Software Center which is a kind of Store of open source applications, all free.
What I like about Elementary OS is its performance and the fact that, thanks to a low use of RAM and CPU, it can be used fluidly and without slowness on underpowered or old computers .
It takes about 10 seconds to start the PC with this system and the applications open almost instantly, as if using an iPhone.
The aesthetic aspect of Elementary OS Loki is splendid, with an application dock at the bottom of the screen and a panel at the top acts as an application menu, clock, and system tray.
Elementary OS Loki does not work like a "normal" operating system with icons on the desktop because it uses the docking station to manage open applications.
Users accustomed to Windows may find themselves a little confused on the first start, but it will take them little getting used to the new launch menu.
Mac users, on the other hand, will immediately feel comfortable.
Note : To get the normal window management buttons, download the " dconf editor " program from the Ubuntu Center, open it and go to org> pantheon> desktop> gala> appearance to change the " button-layout " option to " : minimize, maximize, close ".
in this way you will get the keys to close, minimize and maximize windows as on Windows.
As a full Linux distribution, basic applications are installed on Elementary OS:
- Geary-mail to read emails ;
- Midori as Browser (the lightest of all).
- Totem to watch videos
- Noise to listen to music.
There are also standard applications for writing text, for reading PDFs and for opening the terminal.
For those who want, you can certainly install other programs such as Chrome, Firefox and LibreOffice to write documents.
Elementary OS is an excellent operating system, full of features, super fast and perfect for those unfamiliar with Linux and to make an old PC return to use, even better if portable.
