How to download quickly from the Internet

Downloading a large file from the Internet is no longer a big problem, especially with the new fiber optic and FTTC lines, which allow drastically reducing download times even for files that exceed 5-10 GB in size.
If however we notice difficulties in downloading large files from the browser of the computer (perhaps following a power outage or unexpected restart) in this guide we will show you or how to download quickly from the Internet, with the best tricks to increase the speed of download even from slower servers both at the browser level and at the connection level. In a dedicated chapter we will also show you how to choose a new telephony operator, so as to also solve the slowdowns due to the old ADSL.

Speed up internet downloads

To download quickly from the Internet we can use both the download managers and some tricks to be applied to the connections of our computer. If none of the methods shown work, it is better to look around and look for a new fixed line operator, so as to have a much faster connection (perhaps FTTH or FTTC).

Use download managers

If we want to increase the speed of downloading files from the browser, we recommend using a dedicated download manager such as Free Download Manager, available free of charge for any version of the Microsoft operating system.

With this download manager we will be able to manage all types of Internet downloads in a single interface, including BitTorrent file downloads (as it supports both .torrent and .magnet files).
Behind the simple interface (translated into Italian), there is a handyman manager that allows you to resume abruptly interrupted downloads, to download large files at greater speed thanks to segmentation, to plan a download, to set an alternative download speed and to monitor in real time all the most common browsers, so you can immediately start the download from the manager without going through the browser. It is currently one of the best download managers that we can install on Windows, also given the translated interface and the clear buttons on the top bar.
Another excellent Download Manager program is uGet, excellent especially for multi-channel download that allows you to download the same file from multiple sources simultaneously, making any download from the internet much faster.
Extreme Download Manager is also among the best programs to download fast from the internet.
Alternatively, we can integrate the download manager directly into the browser; one of the free tools we can use is Turbo Download Manager, an extension available for Mozilla Firefox.

It completely replaces the integrated download system and allows you to download faster, thanks to the division into several segments of the larger files (Multi-threading) and the ability to pause and resume downloading any type of file (always if supported by the server). The internal monitoring system allows you to capture the links on the Web pages, so that you can download any element we like.
If we use Google Chrome as a web browser, we recommend that you try the Online Download Manager extension.

The extension allows you to monitor all the download links on the pages, so you can easily manage them from a single place, without having to open the manager integrated in Chrome every time. It supports pause and automatic recovery of downloaded files, so that we can resume our downloads later.

Use tools to increase the connection speed

In addition to the download managers we can increase the Internet connection speed by using other tools for Windows that everyone can use, even the less experienced users.
A good tool to speed up a Wi-Fi connection or an Ethernet cable connection is TCP Optimizer, available for free for any version of Windows.

With this tool, simply indicate the download speed of our connection in the selector at the top, choose the network card that we use to connect to the bulleted list under Network Adapter selection, press down on Optimal and finally on Apply changes to apply the changes system settings and network parameters. The next time we restart we will have a much more responsive Internet connection, especially when opening new pages.
To learn more, we can read our guide on how to optimize the internet connection and the TCP / IP network to navigate faster .
Another good tool that we can use to download quickly from the Internet is Dns Jumper, also available for free for Windows.

With this small tool we can set up new DNS servers for all our connections, choosing them from the Choose a DNS Server field and using the Apply DNS button to make the changes effective. If we do not know which DNS servers to choose, we recommend pressing the Fastest DNS button and immediately confirming the choice with Apply DNS, so as to let the tool choose the best DNS for our connection.

Faster telephony operators (fixed line)

If not even with the previous tricks we get an increase in the speed of connection and download from the Internet, we will have to look around and choose a new operator for the fixed Internet .

We avoid signing a contract with ADSL connection (now too slow and saturated) and we try to snatch a good offer for the fiber, available both as FTTH (real fiber, even inside the house) and as FTTC (fiber up to the cabinet, then copper up to at home).
To help us choose and to check if there is actually fiber coverage at our home, we recommend you also read our Best Optical Fiber guides : check coverage and offers and ADSL and Fiber internet coverage for TIM, Fastweb and others operators .
If we also want to carry out this check from a smartphone, we just need to use one of the apps seen in our article on Apps to check fiber optic coverage .

Conclusions

Although modern browsers have good download managers built in, we can get new features for managing our downloads by focusing on one of the programs recommended in this guide or by using one of the recommended extensions for Firefox and Chrome.
To speed up the Internet connection in general, we can use tricks that act on network parameters or DNS, but the best results will certainly be obtained by switching from an ADSL connection to a fiber optic connection (FTTC or FTTH).
