Thunderbird, the most used and free email program on PC (by Mozilla)

Mozilla is mainly known for the Firefox web browser but still actively develops another very famous and free program called Thunderbird.
Mozilla Thunderbird is the best alternative to Microsoft Outlook, one of the most used email clients in the world, that is, a program to be installed on the computer that is used to read emails, whatever the provider (Gmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo Mail, alice mail and corporate mail).
Thunderbird is a program that, due to its advanced functions, has little to envy Microsoft Outlook, highly configurable and above all extensible with many add-ons, extensions and plugins .
At this moment the Thunderbird 60 version has been released and the time has come to dedicate an article to it.

Mozilla Thunderbird can be downloaded for free in Italian and can be installed on a Windows, Linux and Mac computer.
A lot of add-ons can be added to Thunderbird from the extensions page.
After installing Thunderbird as an e-mail client you can add your e-mail account, providing username and password .
It is no longer necessary, as before, to provide the mail server configuration data because the parameters (IMAP, SMTP, SSL / TLS) are taken from the Thunderbird database and are automatically compiled.
Setting up a new account in Thunderbird 60 is much easier than in previous versions thanks to a renewed and modern interface and in Italian.
Once you arrive at the main interface, you can easily manage e-mail boxes, incoming mail, drafts and sent messages.
The contact directory is easy to manage and you can remove duplicates or add details like the photo.
The renewed toolbar allows you to search for e-mail messages received and sent with immediate results.
You can create all sorts of filters to organize your emails and save them for faster use.
Tabbed browsing allows you to use Thunderbird as you would a browser like Firefox, in order to keep multiple messages open together even while writing a new mail.
Thunderbird 60, just like it was for the release of Firefox 60, is an important version, full of changes, especially at the internal level of the software, now more optimized and compatible with modern technologies.
The biggest change concerns extensions because now Thunderbird will only load extensions marked as compatible with version 60 and later, automatically disabling non-updated add-ons (although this can be bypassed in the internal settings, by opening Tools -> Options -> Advanced - > General, by going to the Configuration Editor and modifying the extensions.strictCompatibility parameter).
The management of add-ons can be done from the menu
You can access it from the menu Tools -> Options Add-ons and once inside you can browse the categories including that of the extensions recommended by Thunderbird.
Among the best plugins and extensions for Thunderbird are, for example:
- Google Calendar to incorporate a Google calendar into the email client;
- Remove Duplicate Messages to eliminate duplicates
- ThreadVis to organize emails in conversations when there are hits and replies.
- ImportExportTools to import and export message folders.
- Enigmail to send encrypted emails.
- Quicktext, to create preconfigured message templates.
- gContactSync, to synchronize the Google address book in Thunderbird.
- Send Later to plan the sending of emails in the future.
The "Troubleshooting" tool accessible from the Help menu -> Information> Troubleshooting, contains all the details on using Thunderbird, useful things for developers and those who use the program as an expert.
Archiving messages helps keep your inbox organized so you can keep emails out of the list without deleting them.
To archive a message you can use the Archive button or press the "A" key.
The spam filter that allows you to filter spam and deliver it directly to the spam folder.
Through manual alerts, Thunderbird automatically learns and improves the spam filter.
Thunderbird automatically blocks the images received in the messages so that they cannot be detected by the monitoring systems and has anti phishing protection.
Suspicious emails that bring the user to the banking site or other scam attempts are automatically reported and there will be a warning if the links in the message are different from the actual destination.
Other new features of version 60 of Thunderbird are:
- Support for FIDO U2F and OAuth2
- Calendar improvements
- Attachment improvements to keep them tidier and find them quickly.
- Support for light and dark themes.
- Native notifications
- spell check in all languages.
- Message templates
- Ability to change the email update interval individually.
- Ability to save sent IMAP messages on PC.
- better management of IMAP accounts, folders, trash and ability to save messages on your computer.
