Stabilize a shaky video taken with a mobile phone or camera

When shooting a video with your smartphone, with a mobile phone or with a camera, the main difficulty is to hold your hand steady to prevent the video from shaking or trembling . Maybe someone can do it but in general it is really difficult to keep a fixed shot with the cell phone in hand, especially if you shoot something walking or running. The video is always and inevitably moved, especially if you use the zoom and, even if the quality was very high, the shaky shots are difficult to see and cause a headache.
Without buying a tripod you can correct a shaky video in order to stabilize the image with video editing programs. In this guide we will show you all the tools that we can use for free to stabilize a blurred video taken with a mobile phone or camera, so as to obtain (as far as possible) a much more stable image.

How to stabilize videos and eliminate flicker

In order to act on all the most used platforms, we will show you both the apps that we can use on Android and iPhone for stabilization and the programs (to be installed or used via the Web) to eliminate flicker or the "seasickness" effect. from our personal videos.

Google Photos (Android)

The first app that we recommend you use on mobile devices to stabilize photos is Google Photos, available for free for Android (the stabilization function is not present in the iPhone, even if the app is available).

Once the app is installed on our device, open it, press on the top left on the menu with the three lines, press on Device folders and open the folder where the video is present. Once pressed on it it will be opened by the player integrated in the app; to stabilize it, press down on the settings symbol (in the center), then press on the item Stabilize . We wait just a few moments for the processing and enjoy the final result, with the stabilized video immediately saved in the internal memory of the device in use.

Emulsio (iPhone and iPad)

If we are looking for something to stabilize a shaky video taken with the iPhone or iPad, we recommend you try the Emulsio ›Video Stabilizer app now.

With this app we will be able to quickly and effortlessly stabilize any video with hand shake or shake, we will only have to open the app, select the video to edit and finally press the circle icon divided in half. In this way the stabilizing filter will be applied, as visible from the division obtained on the screen: we press down on Play to play the video and to immediately notice the differences with the original signed. At the end of the work, press the Share symbol at the bottom right, wait for the conversion to end and use the Save video button to save a copy of the stabilized video.
The program is free for the conversion of any video, to which a watermark will be applied: to remove it we will have to obtain the paid version (through in-app purchase).

Wondershare Filmora (PC)

We want to stabilize the videos on the PC or uploaded to it from smartphones and digital cameras "> Wondershare Filmora (free only in trial version).

This complete video-editing program will allow you to effectively stabilize any video, even the most moved, by acting on some advanced parameters. To use it, open the program on our computer, drag the video into the interface, position it in the lower timeline, press the right button on the newly added video and select Stabilization (or press the ALT + S keys). A window full of items will open at the top left: we use the Regular level parameter to choose the stabilization level (to be compared by starting the video and checking the improvements in real time).
As soon as we are satisfied with the result, we press OK then the Export button, where we can choose the container (MKV, MP4) and the format of the edited video, to be saved in the computer's memory.

Windows Movie Maker

As a free program to stabilize videos you can still use the old Windows movie Maker, which is no longer updated by Microsoft but can still be downloaded from the direct link on Navigaweb.
To stabilize videos using Windows Movie Maker you have to use the Edit menu and then find the Video Stabilization function. Antivibration and low or high correction effects can be used here. If you are not sure, you can apply each setting a little at a time to see the results. You can also preview or cancel the processed video after applying the stabilization setting.

Video-Stabilize (online)

You don't want to install anything on your computer "> Video-Stabilize.

To use this site, all we have to do is drag the video into the Drop your file here area or use the Upload your movie button, wait for the upload to end and let the automatic filter act. It is not necessary to set anything: the site will do everything by itself and, at the end of the conversion, it will start downloading the stabilized video on our computer.

Stabilizo (online)

Another website to stabilize a shaky video taken with a mobile phone or camera is Stabilizo.

The operation is very similar to the previous site: press the Browse button in the center, load the video to be modified, press the Upload video button then let the site act to apply the stabilization filter. At the end we can immediately download the correct video, so as to keep it where we deem it most appropriate.
The site is fast and practical, but it does not allow you to upload files larger than 500MB: if we need to edit larger videos, it is better to act with the PC program seen a little while ago.

Conclusions

The tools offered for free are not very numerous, but still allow to obtain a very effective stabilization, especially for smaller videos (typical of smartphones). Unfortunately YouTube Creator has removed the ability to stabilize videos before uploading them: it was a convenient function, but the new interface no longer allows you to apply improvements.
