Hide the most visited sites in Safari on iPhone, iPad and Mac

The Safari web browser on iPhone, iPad and Mac shows frequently visited websites as soon as it is opened.
This can be a problem for anyone who would like to keep the sites they go to private and don't want them to be on display when a friend or family member picks up his phone or uses his Mac.
Fortunately, there is a customizable option to prevent the Safari browser from showing frequently visited websites, deleting those that are deemed not to be in this list on the Mac or, on iPhone and iPad, completely deactivating the function.
In iOS 9 it is in fact possible to disable the " frequently visited sites " feature, so as to avoid showing the history of the last sites seen on the new tab page in Safari.
In fact, you can choose to see the icons of your favorite sites instead of the last visited on the new iPhone, iPad and iPod tab.
Then open the Settings application, select the Safari category and disable the " frequently visited sites " option under the general options.
To just remove one or more sites from the list of visited, then leaving the function activated, open a new Safari tab, long press the site icon and touch the Delete option to remove it.
Safari will no longer show that site in the new tab even if that site is visited every day.
On Mac, the Safari web browser has a similar function.
The first tab shows the thumbnail previews of the websites you visit most frequently.
There is no way to hide them completely like on iPhone and iPad, but you can prevent specific sites from appearing on the first tab and edit the list in a personalized way.
The top sites page in Safari is always a 4 × 3 grid made up of 12 miniatures.
You can add other sites, remove the ones there are or fix and block some sites so that they always remain in the same place.
Using the button that appears at the top above each thumbnail, hovering the mouse over it, you can lock twelve thumbnails in their place prevents other sites often seen from appearing on this tab.
To remove a site from this list, press the X button.
To manually add a site to the list, open the site, press the share button in the Safari toolbar, select " Add favorite ", and then add this page to the " Top Sites ".
By removing, blocking and adding sites to the list, you can completely customize the top sites page and prevent other sites from appearing automatically here.
The easiest way to hide the list of the most visited sites is to click, in the first tab, the icon of the same in the upper right corner to see the favorites.
Unless you click on the top sites icon again, you can rest easy.
If you also want to remove this possibility, click on the Safari menu at the top to go to Preferences and change the option of the new tab and the new window in order to open not the favorites but a blank page or a site of your choice.
In another article, however, it is explained how to block the saving of the sites visited in the browser history, also on Safari.
