How to recover deleted emails in Gmail

When we use Gmail to manage e-mail we do not need to delete a message to generate order between the messages received, since if necessary, just use the Archive button, so that the message is kept in the archive and no longer appears in the messages received or in the various categories of Gmail. Instead of deleting the messages in Gmail, it is better to always archive them by making them disappear from the list of inbox, so as to have the possibility to reread them by going to the All messages section.
If we have accidentally deleted a message or so far we have always deleted all the messages instead of archiving them, there is still a good chance of recovering them, in particular if we act immediately after we have noticed the error (the timing in this case is everything: before we act, the greater the chances we have of recovering deleted messages).
In this guide we will show you how to recover deleted emails in Gmail on each platform, so you can act on any device used daily to read e-mail.

How to recover deleted emails in Gmail

Since Gmail is an online service, we will show you how to use the Recycle Bin mode from the PC web browser and from the mobile app, so you can recover deleted messages on the fly within 30 days (after this period the Gmail recycle bin will automatically be deleted). If, on the other hand, we use a computer e-mail program, we can also use a forced recovery method to attempt to recover messages older than 30 days.

Recover deleted emails in Gmail from browsers

To recover deleted emails in Gmail just open any web browser (Chrome is fine but Safari, Edge, Firefox etc.), take us to the Gmail web page, log in with our Google credentials and, once you are in the service page, click the More menu on the left side, so you can show the Trash item.

Inside the trash can find all the messages that we have deleted in the last 30 days; now we press the right button on the email to manage and use one of the context menu items.

To restore the e-mail message we use the Move to Inbox item; to move it to another section of Gmail, press on Move to and choose the category or section in which to keep it.

Recover deleted emails in Gmail from smartphone or tablet

If we use Gmail from the app for Android and iOS / iPadOS, the procedure for recovering deleted emails is very similar to what has already been seen on the website. We open the Gmail app on our smartphone or tablet, we log in (if necessary ), then press on the three lines at the top left, so we can show the sidebar and tap on the Trash item.

Here we will find all the e-mail messages deleted by the app or browser in the last 30 days; to restore a message we make a long tap on it, then press on the three dots at the top right and press on the item Move to Inbox ; alternatively we can move the message where we like, choosing the Move in item in the same menu shown a little while ago.
If we want to recover emails even beyond 30 days, we will have to use an alternative email app, with a local email basket; the best apps of this kind can be viewed in our article Best Android apps to read and send Email .

Recover deleted emails in Gmail from computer

To recover the emails deleted from Gmail when we use the PC or notebook, we will have to rely on the local baskets offered by the email management programs .
After configuring Gmail in Microsoft Outlook, Thunderbird and Windows 10 Mail, we can attempt to recover the emails accidentally deleted (after 30 days) by launching a recovery program such as Recuva, available free for Windows.

To recover Gmail messages, we start the program and, once we have chosen the type of file, select the item Email, then press Next, choose the hard disk where to search and finally start the recovery of the messages.
Alternatively, we can use the free EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Free data recovery program.

Even this program, at the first start, allows you to choose the type of files to be recovered: in the selection screen make sure to select the Email item, then click on Next or Next, indicate on which disk to search and finally start the recovery.
To try other programs to recover deleted files (including emails deleted locally on email clients), we recommend you read our guide to programs to recover files on the hard disk .

Conclusions

Deleting emails is no longer necessary, especially on Gmail: just archive them to be able to reread them in case of need or in case of error. If we have deleted an email, we can still recover it quickly from the Gmail trash, which will keep the deleted messages for 30 days: the sooner we act with the recovery, the better! If 30 days have passed and we use an email client on our computer, we still have a fair chance of recovering emails, relying on recovery programs such as Recuva and the like, which will try to recover the previous databases where the email was present not yet canceled.
