Optimize the connection on Android, iPhone by combining WiFi and data

On an Android smartphone or iPhone, when a WiFi connection is active, this is used instead of the data connection; the latter takes over only if the wireless connection no longer takes or is deactivated.
Unfortunately it can happen that a single notch of Wi-Fi can offer a lower speed than the data connection, making us surf at a lower speed than expected.
In this guide we will see how to take advantage of the data connection and the WiFi connection by optimizing the internet connection to obtain the maximum possible speed, both on Android smartphones and tablets and on the iPhone.
The networks are therefore treated as one and we will have faster, optimized browsing and, thanks to a VPN-type app, also more secure .
And if that is not enough, we will show you at the end of the article how to expand the Wi-Fi signal to bring it even in the corners of the house further away from the modem.

1) Wi-Fi assistant

One of the fastest tricks with which to optimize the Internet connection on smartphones involves activating the Wi-Fi Assistant, present on both the latest versions of Android and iOS.
On Android we can activate it by going to Settings -> Wi-Fi and activating the specific item (called Wi-Fi Assistant in most cases, but we can also find it written in other ways such as Hybrid WiFi or WiFi and Data ).
On the iPhone it is called its own Wi-Fi Assistant and we can activate it from Settings -> Wi-Fi .
By activating these items we will have a smartphone capable of simultaneously using both the Wi-Fi connection and the data connection, which in this case is not "turned off" when we pass under a wireless network: it is always available, ready to take over when the Wi- Fi slows down too much or the signal becomes so weak that it can navigate at a speed lower than 2 Mega.
So if in the area where we are the 4G signal of our phone is good, we will always navigate at maximum speed even when we are on Wi-Fi, since even in case of weak wireless signal 4G will help when much more bandwidth is required.
Obviously it is better to have a good data plan when we activate this item: since the data connection is always active, it is better to choose a plan with 10 GB or more .

2) Connections joined with Speedify
Speedify, you can download for free and offers a free 5 GB of traffic plan the first month, which is not a little and then 1 GB for the other months.
If you like and want an unlimited plan, you can pay 5 Euros per month or 35 Euros for a year.
We can download it and try it on any modern smartphone, since it is available for Android and iPhone .

The app is in fact a VPN, therefore it allows to encrypt internet traffic so that it is not possible to intercept or spy on it as well as simulating the connection from a different country .
The first function of Speedify, therefore, is to cover Internet traffic (which is very useful if you travel by connecting to public hotspots or in hotels) and to make sure that websites see us as connected from the USA, Germany, France or from another country of our choice.
You can choose the country by pressing on the center, on the word Connected .
The second purpose of Speedify is, in fact, to optimize the connection by combining wifi and data connections in a smartphone .
If you are connected to a data connection or a slow WiFi, Speedify will try, seamlessly, to move traffic to the other connection, maximizing the bandwidth.
All this happens in the background and there will be no negative effect on the behavior of the applications that will always see only one connection, that is the Speedify VPN.
Using this app is very easy because it works completely automatically.
In the center there is the switch to activate or deactivate Speedify, at the top the used connection lights up (if both are lit we are in a combined connection) and at the bottom there are the statistics of speed gained.
The only type of intervention that needs to be done in the options is to limit data traffic according to your tariff plan, so that it is not all used for Speedify.
Then press the data connection icon and set a possible limit, also choosing the priority or not to use that connection instead of WiFi.
The same can be done on the WiFi connection, which by default is set with higher priority and without limits.
Another option to check is that of the redundant mode .
Touching the word Connected, we scroll down the options and find the Redundant Mode option to enable it and improve the reliability of the connection.
3) Last beach: Wi-Fi Extender
If the 4G connection is weak and the WiFi does not arrive with the necessary signal at the point of the house where we are most on the phone, no trick among those shown above will be able to help us.
In this case we recommend placing a Wi-Fi Extender in the home, i.e. a device capable of amplifying the Wi-Fi signal from the home modem and extending it in the area of the house where we use the smartphone more frequently.
A model that we can consider is the TP-Link RE200, on sale for € 28.

Once this small device is obtained, simply place it in an electrical outlet halfway between the modem and the room where the WiFi takes weakly or is absent, then enter (via Ethernet cable) in the settings and provide access to the main network, so that it can also be extended to new rooms.
We can deepen the discussion on Range Extenders for Wi-Fi networks in the dedicated article below.
