There are many ways to check a computer's hardware data, through commands to be launched on Windows (such as dxdiag and systeminfo), or HWiNFO programs to see detailed information of the system in use. However, if you want to always have this PC data under control, you can permanently view it on the desktop thanks to a small program of the Microsoft Sysinternals team called BGInfo .
BGInfo is a very small and light, free software that works on all Windows PCs, from XP up to Windows 7 and 8 .
The information you can see on the desktop background is as follows:
- Type of system;
- Username;
- Details on the version of Windows, IE and Service Packs;
- CPU, memory, volumes, free disk space;
- Network card, Network speed, network type;
- Default gateway, Subnet Mask, DHCP server, DNS server, IP address, MAC address;
- Startup time.
- Others of your choice.
In the configuration panel it is possible to remove some fields from the display, simply by deleting the row from the left column.
From the right column, on the other hand, you can add more information or, if you are capable, add more info by pressing the Custom button.
For each modification, you can click the Preview button to get a preview of what the desktop will look like.
Pressing on Position you can choose where to make this information appear while pressing the Background button you can change the background and use a black one, in order to make the data more readable.
With the commands at the top, on the other hand, you can customize the font type, size, style (bold, italic, underlined), font color and text alignment (left, center, right).
After downloading BGInfo, you just need to extract the Zip file to a folder and launch BGInfo without any installation.
The impact on memory is minimal so if you like, you can put the file in the autorun folder in the Windows Start menu.
