If due to high memory and CPU usage the computer freezes

In this second installment of questions and answers, we try to solve some very general, but recurring, problems concerning the performance of the computer .
In particular when Windows is blocked and no longer responds to commands or, simply, if it goes too slow.
Most of the time the symptom is an abnormal and abnormal use of CPU or memory by a process or program that is not working properly.
Other times the cause may be a virus or there may be a problem with the corrupt system files or with some services running.
I remember that for any computer problem on which you cannot find an explanation (using the search box above), you can ask me a question using the contact form or leaving a comment on a relevant article.
1) Question : Why is my computer locked and taking up all the RAM memory "> Ctrl + Shift + Esc " to access the task manager, click on the processes tab and order them for the occupied memory by clicking on the header of the corresponding column.
From the numbers you can easily see if some process is using too much memory and just click on it with the right mouse button to use the " End Process " option.
You should then see if the problem still occurs and, if so, uninstall that program.
For more detail on RAM consumption, you can use the Microsoft RamMap tool which shows how the computer uses RAM
In another article, more explanations on how to unlock windows if the pc freezes or if the computer goes slow, using the Task manager
2) Q : My computer has been slow since I installed the antivirus; how can i solve?
Answer : There can be three cases:
- the computer runs slowly because a second anti-virus program has been installed on top of another already present.
In this case, uninstall one of the two immediately because two antivirus programs cannot work together on a computer.
- A fake antivirus has been installed which does nothing but highlight problems.
It is the so-called Rogue Antivirus that pretends to find non-existent malware and infections and that often asks for money to buy the cure (see here how to eliminate fake antivirus).
In any case, even if it were not a fake antivirus, check the list of the best free antivirus of 2012 and eliminate what is slowing down the PC.
- On an old or less powerful computer, the real-time antivirus check could take up too many computer resources.
It is better to follow the guide to speed up the antivirus by excluding paths and folders from the check
3) Q : My computer crashes after I use it, the mouse moves but nothing else responds, what could be causing this problem?
Answer : This usually happens when a program is taking up a significant part of the processor's memory or processing power, especially if you have a single-core processor.
Press the " Ctrl + Shift + Esc " key on the keyboard, open the task manager and note if, in the processes tab, click on the CPU column ordering the elements and notice if any program is using the CPU at 99% or 100%.
To reactivate the computer, just end the process by clicking on it with the right mouse button.
Also check the memory as indicated in question 1.
Now, it is not normal for a program to occupy 100% of the CPU, but this problem could also happen with important applications that cannot be renounced.
If you cannot change computers, you can still use a tool that can limit the use of computer resources from a single process.
In another article, "No more slowdowns of Windows and CPU at 100%" I had described Process Lasso, the best of these tools, no longer free.
Fortunately, there are also other alternatives that allow you to speed up programs by managing the priority of processes and prevent them from abusing the processor.
If the problem depends on the SVCHost process, I recommend reading the Svchost.exe analysis guide if you are using 99% or 100% cpu.
In another article, however, the possible solutions if the high CPU usage is caused by System Interrupt.
4) Q : Very often the message "the application or the program is not responding" appears, what can I do to solve the problem?
Answer : If that program is using too much processor (see question 3) or too much memory (see question 1), the Windows error may appear, for which that program does not respond and crashes.
In these cases, it is better to try to press on "Wait" to see if it unlocks by itself or on Terminate and then restart it and see if it was a random error.
If the error occurs often, I recommend reading the post "If a program crashes and does not respond ..." where I have reported some programs to diagnose and understand the reasons for these blocks.
5) Q : Every now and then an error message appears saying "Windows Explorer has stopped working", what happens?
Answer : of this problem I wrote a specific article with all the possible solutions: Solutions if Windows Explorer stops working and Windows freezes (explorer.exe).
I also add the ability to do a file integrity check of the Windows system using the SFC Scannow utility.
Another possible very simple solution is this: go to the C: \ Windows folder, find the explorer.exe file, copy it and paste it in the C: \ Windows \ System32 folder
