Clean up the Windows Program Files folder

Windows is an operating system that leaves a lot of freedom to its users, allowing the installation of any kind of program without too many limitations and without requiring particular technical requirements.
For this reason it is always good to be careful which software you download and install and it may happen that some of them, even if good, are poorly designed and have difficulty uninstalling completely.
In some cases the removal of a program not done well can leave traces, folders and references in the system registry, in other cases it can instead be the fault of the user in the normal procedure of uninstalling a program.
As even beginners know, it is easy to remove a program from Windows, although for a complete cleaning of every trace of that program it may be necessary to use special software uninstall programs, among which Revo Uninstaller is very famous.
In this article we are going to discover a particular function of one of these programs, included in its latest update, which allows you to clean up the Programs folder, the one where there are all the installed software folders, removing empty or orphaned items
The program we are talking about is Bulk Crap Uninstaller that can be downloaded for free from the developer's website, in a portable version, which does not require installation, for Windows 7, 8 and Windows 10.
At startup, the program displays a wizard to configure some of the instrument's behaviors and searches for all the programs installed in each sector of the computer.
Unregistered applications are displayed in red and those with an unverified certificate with a blue background.
From the sidebar you can hide some elements, such as Microsoft programs, system components or unregistered applications.
The list of applications is sorted alphabetically but you can click on any heading of the various columns to have a different order.
For example, they can be sorted by installation date, size or developer.
Right-clicking on one of the programs to start the removal process that first runs the default uninstaller, then scans the leftover files and registry keys.
Before deleting these references, BCUNinstaller asks you to create a system configuration restore point or a registry backup.
A new feature of version 4.0 is the detection of related apps, useful for finding and removing any different versions of the same program.
The tool to delete folders of orphaned programs related to software no longer installed, go to Tools> Clean folders .
If you are using custom installation locations, go to Tools> Settings> Folders and add any folders that contain programs.
Scanning is very fast and provides a list of folders identified as orphans.
For each folder, an evaluation is also given with a positive identifier for an empty program folder that is certainly to be removed, a negative if there are files that should be checked instead.
Double clicking on an item opens the program folder.
It then becomes easy to select the paths to be removed and clean up the Programs folder in Windows, which is useful for recovering disk space and for giving order to the system.
