Fatigued eyes on the PC; remedies for tiredness

If for work or for fun we spend many hours in front of the PC screen we will inevitably find ourselves with tired and red eyes in most cases, in particular if we spend many consecutive hours looking at the screen without ever taking our eyes off.
Compared to the past, modern monitors wear less eyesight (those who can have years on their shoulders will know very well the harmful effects of phosphor monitors of the 80s and early 90s) but the brightness of the screen and the count watch the characters or images can still make our eyes tired after a few hours.
We see in this guide, which does not talk about eye drops or medical advice, the programs, tips and solutions to decisively reduce eye fatigue without compromising productivity or fun when we are in front of the PC for longer.

1) Remember to disconnect at regular intervals
The first golden rule to avoid fatigue when we spend many hours at the PC is to remember to take a short break of 10 minutes every hour of presence in front of the screen, so as to allow the eyes to rest and thus obtain maximum concentration.
If in the most hectic hours of work it becomes impossible to remember to take your eyes off the PC, we can get help from free programs that can alert us when we worked for an hour straight to the PC and start the regenerating break.
One of the programs that we can use for this purpose is Eyes Relax, available for free download from here -> Eyes Relax .

With this program we will be able to configure the working time and the duration of the break, so that we can plan the rest for the eyes and be alerted in time to be able to take our eyes off the PC before tiredness takes over.
Another similar program that we can use as a reminder or timer is CareUEyes, available for free from here -> CareUEyes .

This complete program allows you to set a sleep timer and also configure the color temperature of the screen according to different scenarios, so as to drastically reduce eye fatigue.
Other programs that we can use to protect our eyes and to remember to detach from the PC screen are available in the guide below.

2) Decrease the brightness of the PC screen
Another very effective trick to reduce eye fatigue when we are in front of the PC for many hours in a row is to reduce the brightness of the screen, acting directly on the control keys normally present on the lower edge of the monitor (however, check each side until you find the buttons control).

We find the keys to adjust the brightness or we enter the interface on the screen until we find the menu related to brightness.
Let's lower it to the minimum readability during the day (it must not be too low otherwise we will not see anything, especially with strong external lighting) and if we work at night we can leave it even at minimum brightness.
In addition to acting on the physical buttons of the monitor, we can adjust the brightness directly from Windows using the menus and items provided.
On Windows 10 simply open the notification panel at the bottom right and click on the item Brightness to adjust the intensity of the light (on notebooks).

Another effective filter to reduce brightness and not strain your eyes is to use the night filter, available on all recent versions of Windows 10.
We open the notification panel at the bottom right again and activate the Night Light filter, so as to have a drop in brightness and a change in color temperature (which will become warm, very restful for the eyes).

If instead we want to use a program to adjust the brightness and color temperature, we can use the CareUEyes program, which we have already indicated in the previous paragraph and is available for free from here -> CareUEyes .

3) Position yourself at the right distance from the screen
It might seem trivial, but the right distance from the monitor also has a great influence on eye fatigue.
If we position ourselves too close to the monitor, our eyes will struggle to read and we will have to move them to be able to read everything from one point to another on the screen, so as to increase the sense of tiredness at the end of the day.
In order to understand the ideal distance to watch the monitor, we take into account the diagonal and the maximum resolution of the monitor in order to obtain the right distance, as indicated by the following image.

On the left we have the ideal viewing distance (from 0.6 meters to 6 meters, the latter not usable for monitors but more suitable for TVs), while at the bottom we have various sizes in inches of monitors (from 20 inches up to 100 inches).
Taking as a maximum reference distance 1.2 meters (beyond it is not sincerely usable for monitors but you enter the field of TV) a 24-inch FullHD monitor should be placed about 0.6 meters from where we see it, up to the 1.2 meters for 30-inch monitors or more.
If we have a 4K monitor, the distances are shorter: a 25-inch 4K monitor should be seen from 0.4 meters, while a 30-inch one should be seen from 0.6 meters.
Distances of less than 0.4 meters can strain your eyesight at any resolution and with any monitor, so let's stick to the table to be able to strain your eyes as little as possible while working or while playing on the PC.
4) Use glasses that filter blue light
The last tip we can give you to reduce eye fatigue and avoid tired eyes to the PC is to take advantage of the protective glasses against blue light, which is emitted very abundantly by all modern LCD monitors, LEDs or other technologies.

By eliminating much of the blue light emitted by the monitors, your eyes will get tired very slowly and seeing a modern display will become very restful, even after hours of viewing.
Obviously these glasses can be purchased without gradation (for those who have no vision problems) or we can contact a trusted optician to obtain the blue filter directly on the eyeglasses.
For those without eye defects you can buy a cheap pair of glasses on Amazon such as the T-Vedo Digital Protection Round, available here -> T-Vedo Digital Protection Round (€ 14).

In another article we have instead seen better and more beautiful PC glasses to see.
Apparently they look like normal eyeglasses, actually integrated a filter against the excess of blue light excellent when we use a tablet, a smartphone, a TV or a PC monitor.
