How to write formulas with Word

If we are high school or university students facing Analysis, Mathematics or Geometry exams, you will surely be asked to create documents, theses or digital analyzes containing mathematical formulas or equations. For this purpose we are not forced to use sophisticated programs or tools, but it is sufficient to use the good Microsoft Word, included in the Office suite, to be able to correctly write the vast majority of the equations and mathematical formulas required or to be implemented.
In this guide we will show you how to write formulas with Word using both the automatic method and the manual method (free writing); if we don't find the formula or the equation that is right for us, don't worry, since Word allows you to download new formulas via Internet connection.

How to write math formulas on Word

As mentioned in the introduction we can write mathematical formulas both using the automatic tools included in the Word program and using freehand writing, which will allow us to digitally report the paper formulas. If we don't have Word on our computer yet, we recommend that you read our guide to Ways to Download Microsoft Word for free (alternatives) .

How to write formulas automatically

To write the formulas using the models offered directly by Word, we open the program from the Start menu or from its icon on the desktop, we open a white page by clicking on Empty document we go to the top in the Insert menu then we click on the arrow next to the Equations item .

The program will show us, in a small window, a series of formulas and equations that we can immediately insert into the created document, with the possibility of placing it at any point (at the top of the page, in the center or to the right).
Once the formula has been added to the document, all we have to do is click on each single element of the same to insert the values or data in our possession, so that we can automatically find out the result. By pressing on the arrow next to the formula, we will have a key to save the formula as written by us, and numerous keys to choose the format of the formula (also obtainable from the Convert key at the top of the ribbon bar), the arrangement and the 'alignment.

In this way we will have maximum control on where to place the newly added formula.

How to download new formulas

Inside Word we will find ready to use numerous formulas and very common equations ready to use, but what few people know is that Word can download thousands of new formulas ready from the Internet, without even leaving the program! To do this, go back to the Insert menu, press the arrow icon next to the Equations item and select the Other equations item from Office.com .

Another window will open from where we can download numerous other formulas and mathematical equations, from the simplest to the most complex ones. By clicking on the formula to be added it will be present in our Word in subsequent accesses to the menu, so as to have all the formulas we intend to add to the document just a click away.

How to write formulas manually

If we are teachers or we want to create formulas manually, just open the Insert menu as seen so far, press directly on the Equations button and use the mathematical tools available in the top bar of Word.

A good mathematician will know immediately how to move between symbols, fractions, radicals, parentheses, functions, limits, logarithms and matrices, by pressing on the right button sequence to be able to fill in the mathematical formula.
In addition to the digital writing of the formula, we can also take advantage of freehand writing: from the same toolbar seen at the top, we press the Equation pen icon and, from the sheet that will appear, we start typing with the mouse (holding down the right button ) the mathematical formula we intend to add: Word will convert it to digital formula immediately.

In the window that appears we can also use the Delete button to delete part of the formula, the Select and correct button to make changes and the Delete button to delete the entire content. To insert the formula into the document, simply press the Insert button.
If we have difficulty writing formulas with the mouse, we consider getting a USB graphics tablet, such as the one shown here -> Huion H420 OSU (17 €).

Conclusions

Creating formulas on Word is a walk, once you understand which menu to call up and how to use the many formulas and equations ready to be filled out. If we are great mathematicians we can also create our set of formulas and save them on Word, so as to reuse them at the right time. If, on the other hand, we are looking for methods to solve mathematical formulas, we recommend that you use the online mathematics service offered by Wolram Alpha, which allows you to obtain even complex operations results (unfortunately it is in English so we will have to be good at translating all formulas) .
As teaching tools we can also rely on the scientific calculator that shows the steps of solving functions and equations and our article on the best math programs, so that we can find the right program to help us during the study of mathematics.
We use a lot of smartphones or tablets to solve mathematical equations, we invite you to continue reading on our article on the Best math apps for Android and iPhone, where we will find many scientific calculators and apps to solve most of the problems.
