Solve Windows problems with MSConfig for a clean, safe and error-free boot

When a Windows system crashes once, it's all normal but when it crashes often then there is some problem that needs solving.
It is not said, however, that the block is total enough to restart the computer or to nail it with the arrow of the mouse stopped; equally annoying is seeing the Microsoft Windows error message appear often, when trying to start a program or a series of programs that do the same thing.
It has happened to me several times, since I write on the internet, to receive requests for help or objections by telling me that the xyz program does not work and freezes or, worse, sends the computer in tilt.
Other cases of errors are software that refuses to start and ends immediately, drivers that do not work with external devices that are not working, processes that suddenly stop causing the hateful error window to appear.
The cause is generally linked to conflicts between installed programs that perhaps exploit the same files and quarrel among themselves.
If Windows is bad then, you need to cure it and find the source of the problem .
In another article that I keep updated as a summary, there are all the best tricks and ways to optimize Windows and prevent errors.
In many other security articles, viruses and malware are considered to be the main source of problems.
On the event display log (see post for how to use it) you will find all the indications of error and their origin.
Many times in this blog I insisted that the best way to cure Windows from slowdowns or malfunctions is to operate manually, without the use of automatic tools that do their job but do not go further.
The utility object of this article is called MSConfig and is internal to Windows systems, both Windows 7 and Windows 10 and 8.1.
With MSConfig you can make a clean boot of the computer in safe mode (Clean Boot), without therefore loading drivers and external programs and recognizing, going by exclusion and with selective startup, which file or process or software is responsible for problems .
MSConfig is the short name for the Windows System Configuration Utility and is a vital application for systems engineers and technicians that can be safely used even by non-expert users.
In this post, we try to see and explain everything that can be done and how to use MSConfig.
To start the utility, for both Windows 7 and Windows 10, you have to go to Start -> Run (or by pressing the Win + R keys) and write "msconfig".
Restarting Windows in safe mode allows you to load the system without any software, drivers or external process.
In general, this type of PC startup is performed by pressing the F8 key right at power-up, when you see the first black screen with a bit of writing and numbers.
With MSCOnfig you can restart your computer cleanly, without having to press the F8 key which, at times, may not work.
Theoretically, in the first tab of the configuration utility, the " Diagnostic Start " option should be chosen, however, since in this way the important restore points are deleted, then it is better to choose the selective start .
Since selective startup, the flag is raised to everything except " Load system services ".
In the " Services " tab instead you have to put the flag at the bottom item " Hide all Microsoft services " and then press on " Disable all ".
When finished, press Apply, OK and restart your computer cleanly.
After the PC has restarted it will be possible to check whether the programs that went wrong, work correctly or not.
If they go, the problem is related to one of the disabled services or to one of the programs that is listed on the MSConfig start menu, otherwise there is something else and you have to continue to investigate in other ways.
To identify the service causing the error, proceed by exclusion by reconfiguring the startup selectively and starting the PC, this time, with half of the services active and the other half disabled.
If everything is still all right, the blame and the cause are included in the non-activated half and you can continue on until you find the problem.
When you want to restart Windows normally, set " Normal Startup " to MSConfig
The Safe Boot or safe mode or diagnostic boot, is used instead in the most serious cases where it is suspected that the computer is infected with viruses or malware.
With these system modes, the computer turns on without loading anything external therefore, unless very serious cases, not even malicious programs or files.
MSConfig is also useful for setting the start menu of programs in an alternative way by disabling what is not considered useful and to speed up the initial loading of the PC in an alternative way to what is written on the article "how to speed up the boot of a computer" or "how to avoid a slow boot on Windows".
On Windows 7 and 8 and Windows 10, MSConfig also allows you to disable the UAC security check from the "tools" tab.
In cases where MSConfig lists files in the Startup tab, which no longer exist, you can use a small program, MSConfig CleanUP Utility, which allows you to remove old items that have remained aimlessly.
Clearly this does not happen if you often clean up obsolete files with tools like CCLeaner or if you use Windows Installer Cleanup.
In other articles, we have seen tools, which I personally have always preferred, such as HijackThis or IClean but which are less simple to understand even if more effective in cases where the PC is infected with viruses or malware.
If the pc goes very slow or freezes with the arrow, to unlock it there are some tips on another post.
If your computer freezes with a blue screen, you can analyze the cause with a program called WhoCrashed.
If the PC does not start right up and freezes immediately, then a solution can be found using the boot CDs and the recovery ones even if you need to be a minimum of experts.
Finally, if you realize that the computer is not working well today but yesterday it was wonderful, then you can simply resort to automatic recovery of the optimal configuration.
