Fix problem "USB device can run faster

If you have been using Windows for several years, it is likely that you received the error message " this device can run faster .... " at least once when you connect a USB device to your computer.
This Windows message tells the user that the theoretical possibility of transferring data at a faster speed to or from the USB stick is being lost.
As often happens, however, Windows does not say how to solve this problem which has a series of possible causes and relative solutions.
The strange thing is that the message says to connect the device to a USB 2.0 port, even if it is already connected to a USB 2.0 port, or at least so you think.
First, try to turn off and on the computer and see if the message disappears; otherwise, here are the solutions:
1) A first cause of this USB port speed problem is surely the nature of the connected device.
If you take a very old USB stick from the drawer, which does not support USB 2.0 connection speed, then Windows will bring up the message which, in this case, would indicate that the USB port is operating at a slower speed than its possibilities .
This problem can also occur when you connect a USB 2.0 device to a USB 3.0 port on new computers.
Each USB device is compatible with the same ports, only the speed changes.
2) Another factor that can cause the " device can run faster " message is related to drivers .
To resolve this, you can try downloading and installing the latest updated USB port driver or motherboard chip driver from the computer manufacturer's website or the motherboard manufacturer's website.
From the Windows control panel, enter " Device Manager " and check if there are Universal Serial Bus Controller (USB) devices with a yellow icon and an exclamation mark next to them.
In this case, press the right mouse button on the element presenting the error and proceed to update or install the relative drivers.
In another article there is everything you need to know about updating the drivers while in another guide you can read how to solve hardware and device installation problems
3) The problem may be related to the USB cable .
If the cable was originally designed for USB 1.1 devices, it may not work properly at the speed of USB 2.0.
In order not to leave anything to chance, you can try to connect the device to the computer with another cable and check if the message appears the same.
4) Try connecting the USB device or cable to a different port on the computer .
The USB port may be defective and not working properly.
It is also possible that the problem is with the device itself so it is better to try to connect it to another computer to see if the problem disappears.
If the message is always displayed, whatever PC you use, then it can be assumed that the device is damaged.
5) Some devices may need more power and energy .
In particular, external hard drives may require additional power beyond the energy that is transmitted from the computer via the USB connection.
This can often occur when using a USB hub that does not supply enough power.
Only self-powered hubs can provide enough power to support USB devices connected to it.
This also applies to other devices that function as hubs, such as monitors with included USB ports.
In these cases, the speed problem is solved by connecting the peripheral directly to the PC.
It is also possible that the computer does not supply enough power to its USB port and is defective.
6) The BIOS settings are incorrect.
The BIOS of many computers have a setting to choose between different USB modes and are configured with the optimal setting.
If this has been changed, it may cause slow and not fast operation of the USB ports and connected devices.
To access the computer's BIOS, you must restart it by pressing the F2 or Del key during startup.
From the BIOS menu, check that the USB settings are configured for the highest possible speed: for example, if the computer supports USB 2.0, the USB 2.0 mode must be set in the BIOS and not 1.1.
7) If you cannot solve this problem or if you decide that it is okay, you can disable the appearance of the message .
The device continues to operate even if at a slower speed than theoretically possible, but at least you will not receive boring and continuous warnings.
To deactivate the notification of the problem, enter the Device Manager from the Windows Control Panel, click on USB Host Controller and, for each of them, right-click, select Properties and remove the cross under "Indicates whether it is possible to improve the performance of your device "on the Advanced tab.
If you have this problem, leave a comment to say how you solved it !.
To finish, remember to install the hotfix to improve the speed of USB sticks on Windows 7.
