Mute Whatsapp and disable notifications on Android and iPhone

Whatsapp is a now universal, very useful communication tool for chatting or sending messages as it used to be with SMS.
The problem is that, being free, there is no limit to the messages that you can send and receive too many can be annoying.
So if you receive too many notifications from chat with groups or to maintain the privacy of the most private messages, perhaps with a girlfriend or a lover, so that they do not appear on display on the phone screen, you must learn to disable notifications of Whatsapp or make them silent, for contacts and groups, both at the level of a single chat, at the application and smartphone level.

First of all, let's see how to silence Group notifications or turn them off completely .
To do this on an Android smartphone, open the group conversation, tap the options button at the top right on Whatsapp, tap on Silent, select a year and then choose, on the same screen, whether to show the notifications anyway or disable them.
This option is a must for all the most talkative and noisy groups, in order not to be constantly distracted.
The group's messages will continue to arrive and can be read by opening the chat.
you can always change your mind by pressing the group options again and tapping Activate audio .
To deactivate the sounds for all the groups instead open the Settings, go to Notifications and choose, under Group notifications, as the notification tone, None .
Then turn off the vibration, pop-up notification and LED notification.
On iPhone to remove notifications as well as audio, tap on Personalized Alerts and disable Alerts, leaving the notifications active if you prefer.
To disable notifications for all groups, on iPhone just open the Whatsapp settings, go to the Notifications tab and then, under group notifications, turn off the Alerts .
To disable also sounds for all the groups instead set the Group message option to silent.
To disable the notifications of a single contact instead, you must meanwhile prevent the phone from making a sound every time you receive a message from a specific person.
To do this on Android, go to the contact list, touch the profile picture of the person to be silenced, touch the i to enter the options and, under the notifications, activate the Silent option.
On iPhone, open the conversation, go to the options and then tap on More to find the button and silence that conversation.
Also in this case you can choose, as you do for groups, to also disable notifications for messages received by that person.
Messages from people silenced will still continue to arrive.
If you no longer want to receive messages from a person, they can be blacklisted.
In this regard, I refer to the guide to block contacts on Whatsapp .
To completely disable Whatsapp notifications and no longer receive them in any case, you must act at the system level.
On an Android smartphone, when a new Whatsapp message arrives, drop the notification area by dragging it with your finger from top to bottom, then touch and hold on the Whatsapp notification until a dot appears with the i .
Touch the i and turn on the option to block application notifications completely.
On some versions of Android this option is also found by going to Settings> Apps> Application List> Whatsapp and removing the cross in the Show notifications box.
On the iPhone, however, you can disable notifications entirely from the Whatsapp app, under Settings> notifications .
You can also go to the General Settings of the phone, to the Notifications section and turn off those for Whatsapp, either by deactivating any sound, or removing them from the notification area
In general, you can also simply choose a silent tone for all Whatsapp notifications, both on Android and iPhone, in order to make each notification and message reception silent, while leaving the notifications active in the notification bar.
