The most famous of these is Babylon, easy to use, complete and full of bi-directional translations for almost all the languages of the world, but not free and paid.

Lingoes is a dictionary and text translation software, in Italian, for Windows.
The application is extraordinarily powerful and complete to be a free program even if the interface requires a bit of habit.
When you download Lingoes, you can choose the version to be installed on a PC and the portable version to be copied to a USB stick and only the essential English dictionary is provided.
On the same site, however, several Italian dictionaries can be downloaded for free, including: English-Italian, Italian-English, Italian-Chinese, Italian-Russian and some others.
In addition there are premium dictionaries, always free, but only in English.
The download of these vocabularies can be done from the same site where you download Lingoes and, after unpacking them, they must be loaded into the program, from the dictionary options menu.
All dictionaries installed in Lingoes can be used simultaneously.
Words or phrases whose translation is to be searched for, must be entered in the search box of the program and Lingoes will automatically display the best match and the translated words in its interface.
The definition of a word and the phonetic form are displayed on the results page and the program tries to automatically associate the phrase with one of the installed dictionaries.
From the dictionary options menu, you can choose whether to use all the vocabularies together, give priority to one or another or deactivate some.
After searching for a definition or a translation, you can select a translated word or phrase, right click and listen to the vocal pronunciation by pressing on "Say".
Pressing the "Translation" button activates the translation of the text which can be done using one of the simultaneous online translation systems such as Google Translate, Yahoo BableFish or others.
The translated text is directly displayed in the program interface, without opening the browser.
Keyboard shortcuts are available to use the program's functions at the system level, that is, to translate words with Lingoes, even while browsing the internet or from a Word document.
As you can see, Lingoes remains in the background and is visible from the icon at the bottom right.
By right-clicking on it you can activate the word capture on the screen and the translation on selection.
In the options you can configure, among other things, several shortcut keys, how to capture words and whether to start Lingoes when the computer is turned on or not.
Lingoes is an excellent program and perhaps the best free for people who need and often use a text translator.
Alternatively, I remember simpler translation programs based on Google Translate.
