The icons of USB sticks, external drives and CDs on the desktop if they are connected (Windows)

When you attach a USB stick or an always USB external disk to the computer, there are no warnings or warnings on the PC.
Also, unless an automatic action has been set in the AutoPlay settings (which is not recommended), nothing happens if you connect a USB stick to your PC.
Thanks to a small tool, which I can't believe I have done without to date, it is possible to display the icon of the USB stick connected to the computer on the desktop so that it automatically appears if it is attached and that disappears when it is detached.
Now you no longer need to go to Windows Explorer and look for the removable drive, USB device or CD / DVD player icon.
Just connect a USB device or insert the CD disc into the player and then click on the icon that magically appears on the desktop to view its contents, with a not bad shortcut.
As someone rightly notes, Windows has its own autorun feature that asks what you want to do whenever a USB drive is connected or when a CD is inserted into the drive.
among the options is to do nothing and to automatically open the contents of the USB stick.
These options can be changed in Windows 7 and 8 from Control Panel> All Control Panel Items> AutoPlay .
Even if you have set the folder to open automatically when the USB stick or external driver is attached to your computer, it is still convenient to have the icon handy on the desktop.

The DestkopMedia tool is small (just 300 Kbytes), light, free and almost invisible on the system, running on Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8 and all other versions.
After downloading the zip file, extract the folder and install the application on the system.
During the installation you are asked whether to enable Start with Windows or whether to start the program when the computer is recommended.
If you want to decide later, you will have to put the link of the program (which will be found in the Start menu) in automatic execution.
After installation and execution, you can immediately check the appearance of the CD icons and USB drives already connected to the PC.
If you attach a USB stick or put a DVD in the player, the icon will automatically appear on the desktop to explore its contents.
The icon will disappear when the USB drive is detached or if the DVD disc is removed.
Right-click on the Desktop Media icon on the systray near the clock to enter the options.
The program can be told to ignore the presence of some drives so that the icons do not appear in two ways, by selecting the letters in the ignore list or by deselecting the types of drives to be displayed.
The types of drives are removable disks, fixed drives, removable drives, network resources and RAM disks.
In the options you can also choose to hide the Desktop Media icon thus making it disappear from view and to memorize the position of the icons.
In my opinion this is a truly indispensable tool, especially for those who use a lot of USB sticks, external disks, network resources and CD-ROMs.
