A chat is not a chat if you cannot draw smileys and emoticons. I remember in the past that I chatted on MSN Messenger with people who for any letter or combination of letters drew one of these emoticons and it was never clear what they were talking about. Beyond these excesses, I had already written how the main smileys and emoticons are made with the keyboard and how, in the main chats, the symbols are transformed into funny drawings.
Facebook chat supports graphic emoticons and some types of faces to express a mood quickly or to make yourself understood without too much chatter.
The problem with Facebook chat, however, is that there are no buttons to make classic emoticons appear with the mouse (although it is possible to send large stickers on Facebook chat ), you have to write them with the keyboard and they often appear almost casually. This can however be easily overcome both on PC on the Facebook site, and on Android and iPhone smartphones using Facebook Messenger.

The emoticons available consist mainly of smileys and additional options for writing bold (* word *) or underlined (_word_) text.
Since 2013, it has also become possible to use the "Emoji" Facebook smileys to write in posts and comments .
To write the new most wanted emojis and emoticons, on the other hand, you can open a site like i2Symbol is another site to write emoticons and smileys on Facebook that also provides extensions for the Chrome and Firefox browsers.
From i2symbol, open the Facebook emoticons section, click the category and then the one you want to use as you would with a normal written text, make a copy and then, on Facebook, paste to insert it in chat, in a comment or in a post.
If you don't want to have the most emoticons handy on your PC, the Chrome Emoji Keyboard extension adds a toolbar at the top of the Facebook chat window that shows all the available emoticons . All graphic emoticons are displayed as small images above each Facebook chat. You can select one with a click and add it to the text to be sent during a conversation with a friend.
From smartphone, in Facebook Messenger you can use the same tricks described to insert Emoji in Whatsapp, therefore using the right keyboard app.
Unicode emoticons can also be used on Facebook. Unicode works in all browsers and, even if these emoticon graphic emoticons are monochromatic (in black and white), it is possible to access a much wider and richer set of symbols and characters . Unicode symbols can be entered easily from the numeric keypad, if you know the key sequence, or from the Character Map of Windows, Mac or Linux.
