How to record calls and audio on iPhone

If we have been using an iPhone as our primary phone for a while, we will surely have realized that some functions (easily found on an Android smartphone) are not as immediate on the iPhone, as in the case of recording the audio of a call or creating voice memos, useful for taking notes with your voice or for recording a conversation made on the phone (important phone call to keep track of, lectures in a university classroom, job interview tests, etc.).
In this guide we will show you how to record audio on iPhone in all the most common scenarios, so you can have a "digital recorder" at hand for any eventuality. In the case of calls, we will necessarily have to use an app or an external device for this purpose, since basically the iPhone does not offer any menu or button to record incoming or outgoing calls, as often happens to find on an Android smartphone.

How to record voice on iPhone

Below we have collected all the methods in the various chapters to be able to record audio on iPhone, whether they are voice memos or they are calls made with the phone. In the latter case, we recommend that you proceed only according to the terms of the law: it is lawful to record a call in progress without even notifying the user (if it accepts the call it gives implicit consent), but the disclosure of the recorded material is not allowed without consent signed.

How to create voice memos

The simplest audio recordings that we can make on an iPhone are voice memos: in them we can insert our thoughts, dictate a list of things to do, rehearse for an interview (so as to hear our voice again) and so on. In order to record voice memos, press the Voice Memos app (present in the Extras folder).

In the first screen we press on Continue, then we tap on the red button at the bottom to start recording a voice memo. At the end of the recording, press the Stop button at the bottom to save the recording. From the same app we can listen to all the recordings made, selecting the one to listen again and pressing the Play button, or edit the memos by pressing the Edit button at the top right.
We can record an unlimited amount of recordings, of any length : the only real limit is the internal memory of the device. With an associated Apple account all voice memos will be synchronized online, therefore also accessible from other Apple devices (other iPhones, iPads and Macs).
Basically, the iPhone records audio in compressed quality and deletes all voice memos older than 30 days: to change this behavior, go to the Settings app, press on Voice Memos and modify the items Permanently delete and Audio quality, choosing when time to keep the files and the quality of the recording.
If we want to create voice memos that can also be listened to on Android or Windows PC, instead of using the system app Voice Memos, we suggest using Telegram: once logged in on the messaging app, we press on the chat Saved messages ( a personal chat that cannot be read by anyone), then press the microphone symbol at the bottom right, taking care to drag it upwards: the recording of the voice note will start (without having to hold down the key). At the end, press the Stop symbol and send the voice note so as to save it in the personal chat, ready to be listened to on any other Telegram compatible device.

How to record calls with an app

If recording a voice memo is decidedly simple, recording calls on iPhone is much more complex, since there is no integrated function.
One of the best external apps to record calls on iPhone is TapeACall.

This app takes advantage of the "three-way call" operator functionality to be able to interpose the call and thus register, at the highest possible quality. To record an incoming call, press the TapeACall symbol, wait for the call to the recording line and finally touch the union button on the screen to create a 3-way call between the interlocutor and the app registration line.
To record an outgoing call, press the record button. The application will dial the registration line and start recording; now press the Add Call button on the screen, call the person we want to register, then press the merge button when it answers.
The app is supplied in a fully functional Lite version for 7 days, where we can record and play all calls without limits, at the end of the trial period we will have to sign up for a monthly or annual subscription in order to continue using the app.
The only alternative app that we have been able to find is Telstar's Call Recording, which works very similar to when already seen on TapeACall (which we also recommend for the clearer interface and the numerous integrated functions).

How to record calls with an external device

If the apps we have shown you are not for us, we can record calls with some external devices designed for the purpose.
One of the best devices to record calls on the iPhone is the Call recorder for iPhone / in-ear (30 €).

To use this device, simply connect it to the Jack headphones socket on the iPhone (or to the Jack-Lightning adapter on the latest models) and start the call; as we speak, just press the Rec button to start recording from the small capture device located in the center of the headphones, so that you can record the entire conversation in a comfortable audio file that can also be transferred to a PC.
Alternatively, we can use a small dictaphone like the Photofast Call Recorder (€ 22).

Once connected to the Lightning socket of the iPhone, just connect a pair of headphones and press the Rec button to start recording the call.
As a last resort we can start the audio of the call from the iPhone speaker and record hands-free with a digital voice recorder such as the Sony ICDPX240.CE7 (37 €).

All we have to do is start the hands-free call and place the recorder near the iPhone, so as to record both our voice and the voice of our interlocutor with good quality.

Conclusions

Despite some gaps in the iPhone regarding call recording, we can still record all types of calls through apps or through special recording devices. If, on the other hand, we want to save voice notes, we can use the app integrated in the operating system or Telegram, so that we can share the recording on any other device.
