App for calculating highway toll on Android and iPhone

When planning a trip by car, try to keep track of any expenses, even more if other travelers want to contribute to the expenses (it is not uncommon for one or more friends or relatives to reach a destination to offer you to share the costs for the trip) .
When you decide to travel by car to reach distant destinations (in addition to fuel costs) you will also have to take into account the costs for the motorway toll, which is widespread on most of the Italian motorway network (there are few free toll motorways in the area ).

Calculation of the toll to be paid
The motorway toll is not unique for all types of motor vehicle, but changes according to the height of the vehicle and the axles it has.
For each class there is a different cost for the toll; the available classes are the following:
- Class A : all motor vehicles with a height of 1.3 meters or less, calculated on the front axle.
This toll applies to the vast majority of cars, but also applies to motorcycles and scooters with a displacement of at least 150cc.
- Class B : includes all vehicles over 1.3 meters in height, calculated on the front axle.
This category includes most of the SUVs, off-road vehicles, campers, 2-axle coaches and two-axle trucks.
- Class 3: this includes large vehicles with 3 wheel axles.
Vehicles that pay this toll include cars with single-axle rear carriers, cars with single-axle caravans, campers with rear single-axle carriers, 3-axle coaches, trucks with traction only and trucks with 3 axles.
- Class 4: some of the larger vehicles that circulate on motorways fall into the category with 4 axles.
Cars with double-axle caravans, cars with double-axle carriers, campers with double-axle carriers and all trucks with double-axle trailers are part of the category.
- Class 5: the largest vehicles that can cross the highway, with 5 or more axles.
They include all the larger trucks with two or more trailers or with trailers equipped with a large number of axles (which are added to those of the tractor).
In addition to the classes, motorway toll costs also vary based on other factors:
1) Characteristics of the motorway sections traveled (flat or mountain): the tariff takes into account the construction, management and maintenance costs of the motorway sections.
In the mountainous stretches, with many viaducts and tunnels, maintenance costs are much higher than on a flat highway.
2) Concessionary company that manages the section: some motorway sections can be served by several motorway companies, therefore the toll must be adequate to meet the costs of all the companies involved.
App for highway toll calculation
After seeing a bit about how the highway toll works, it's time to see which apps you can use on your smartphone to carry out the toll calculation on the fly wherever you are.
Highway Toll (Android)

With this app you can immediately calculate the cost of the highway toll on your Android device.
To use the app, simply enter the exit tollbooth and the exit tollbooth, perhaps with the help of the GPS navigator (if you need to retrieve the exit tollbooth, which is not always easy to understand, especially in large cities with multiple motorway exits) .
Once the toll booths have been inserted, simply press the calculate button to see the toll costs based on the vehicle class.
In addition to the costs of the highway, you can also calculate the fuel consumption for the route, whatever the power supply of your car.
You can download this app for free for Android devices from here -> Highway Toll
Toll Cost (iPhone and iPad)

If you have an Apple smartphone or tablet, the only app you can use to calculate highway tolls is the Toll Cost .
This app allows you to calculate the toll by entering the exit and exit tolls, with the costs divided by classes in plain sight.
Compared to the Android app, however, this app is available on the App Store for a fee (€ 1.99), so consider whether you need this type of app for your travels.
You can download the app from here -> Toll Cost
Highway toll websites
Are you not happy with the iPhone app or the Android app and are you looking for free alternatives?
In this case you can rely on websites, easily accessible with browsers integrated into modern smartphones (Google Chrome on Android and Safari on iOS) and able to calculate the motorway toll with great precision.
The first site that I recommend you to use for the calculation of the motorway toll is offered by Autostrade per l'Italia, reachable from here -> Autostrade Mobile

The site is optimized for mobile navigation and allows you to enter the city of departure and the city of arrival in the fields, with an indication of the vehicle class.
To obtain the calculation of the motorway toll, just press the Search button once the required fields have been filled.
Alternatively, you can use the following site, always offered by Autostrade per l'Italia, which also shows you the route to be followed on the motorway network and any obstacles (queues, traffic, slowdowns and accidents).
The site can be reached from here -> Motorways, routes and tolls

To calculate the motorway toll, simply use the fields in the left sidebar Select departure and Select arrival, choose the vehicle class and click OK to receive information on the toll.
