How to Crop and Resize Videos on Android and iPhone

It is quite easy to change the proportions of the photos on a smartphone, using the Photos app on the iPhone or the Google Photos app on Android (and on the iPhone) and in the same way it is possible to crop a video, that is, change the height or width to be able to see it in the best way depending on the device used. For example, therefore, you can make a vertical video horizontal or to aim the lens at a particular part of the scene, removing the rest from the middle or optimize a video to publish it on Instagram with the right dimensions.
Without needing to use complicated applications, it is possible to make the "Crop" crop and change the "aspect ratio" (resize) of a video on the iPhone and on each Android smartphone using integrated tools or simple apps.

Crop videos or change the aspect ratio of a video on iPhone

For the "crop" and "Aspect Ratio" operations on the iPhone you can use the editing features of the Photos app of the latest version of iOS (and iPadOS) .
Then open the video you want to edit in the Photos app and tap the Edit button.
In the video editing window, touch the Crop button located in the bottom row.
A box will appear above the video that you can resize with your finger from the corners. The part inside the frame becomes the part that you cut out and want to keep, while everything that remains outside is eliminated throughout the length of the video. Once you have decided on the frame, you can pinch the screen to enlarge the video display so that you can adapt it within the frame.
To do it first, if you don't want to use the freehand crop tool and instead want to change the aspect ratio and size of the video in order to optimize it for viewing on a particular screen or on a particular app (for example to create a story of Instagram or 4/3 to see it in a centered and almost square way), you can use the already configured clipping presets .
From the crop section, touch the Aspect Ratio button at the top right and choose the display mode, whether vertical, horizontal or square. Among the horizontal orientation options, you can also choose from a list of proportions, which you can try in preview without saving, and then you can select the right one. Once a proportion is selected, pinch to zoom in or pan to move the video within the cropped area. Once satisfied, press Finish to save the video in a different proportion and cropped.
At any time, on Photos for iPhone and iPad, you can restore the original video via the Restore button.
If you want to use an application with multiple tools, you can try the best apps to edit videos on iPhone and Android, among which they work well for cropping and resizing Quik and InShot videos.

App to Resize and Crop a video on Android

For the moment, it is not possible to crop videos with Google Photos. It therefore takes a different application.
The best among the specific ones, that is to say, they only serve to crop videos, is Crop & Trim Video, free of charge. The app is very simple, it asks you to choose the operation to be performed and then select the video to work it automatically. The Crop option is the one used to crop a part of the video to display only the selected area. Using your finger you can zoom in and out on the crop frame, move it and then, when satisfied, confirm and save the new video.
The other options allow you to cut part of the video (then delete a piece of it), to apply effects of improvement or blur (Blur), which can be used to give more importance to a part of the scene by placing the background in the background, blurred other.
Another application that allows you to change the aspect ratio is GoPro's Quik, which I had already talked about in another article. In Quik, press the + button to add a video from the gallery or from Google Photos, then touch the pencil button to enter the editing tools among which we can choose the one that Crop . In Quick, moreover, you can scroll through the various tools at the bottom (without going into edit mode) to find the one called Portrait that changes the aspect ratio of the video . You can then transform, in an optimized way, a horizontal video vertically and vice versa or make a square video .
The third app to mention in this article is, of course, InShot, which among its tools has a Cropping tool very similar to that of the iPhone, where you just need to drag and resize the frame to select the part to be framed and the one to be excluded. Furthermore, in crop mode, you can resize the video to make it square or with 4: 5 aspect ratio (perfect for Instagram), 16: 9, 9:16 (perfect for TikTok) or other ready-made proportions.
