The income, for all news sites and blogs, comes only from online advertising which however can be easily ignored or blocked by users.
I talked about this problem in a previous article, pointing out how blocking online advertising can cause the death of websites or, at least, the smaller ones.
To address the problem, some of the world's biggest news sites such as the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, the New York Times have implemented a Paywall system .
Although there may be differences between one paywall and another, they all have in common the fact of blocking free access to articles and other content, immediately or after the user has viewed some of them.
With the paywall you will then have to choose whether to pay the monthly subscription or simply close that site and read another one which, for me, is still the best thing since there is no shortage of alternatives.
As I see it, the paywall is not a valid solution to the problem of how to monetize news websites, because however many visitors are lost who abandon the site instead of paying. In addition, a search on Google is enough to find some more or less effective tricks to overcome these paywalls and get around any type of paid block .
The trivial trick to get around the Paywall of some sites is that of opening a browser incognito window .
For example in Chrome just press the CTRL-Shift-N keys together to open an incognito tab and navigate on isiti as if it were the first time.
Easy to think that this possibility of getting around the payment of the subscription has been left on purpose so as not to lose too much traffic and to let only those who have money to throw or who are really not very good with these things subscribe.
An extension for Chrome or Firefox that automatically opens the site in incognito or private mode may therefore be useful.
For other sites (especially for American newspapers) and in the case of more intelligent and protected Paywalls that really block the connection to a website and the reading of articles if you don't pay for a subscription, there is instead a really effective trick.
The anti-paywall trick works well using Firefox as a web browser, installing these two extensions:
- RefControl
- User-Agent Switcher
Both extensions have two buttons to display in the bar at the top right (if they do not appear, open the Firefox options and customize the interface).
Otherwise you can use the Tools menu that appears by pressing the Alt key in Firefox and configure the extensions in the add-ons window.
In the RefControl options, press on Add site and write the address of the site with Paywall, then as Action click on Customize and write next to the address //www.google.com/ .
In the User Agent Switcher options instead add the GoogleBot user agent, that is:
Mozilla / 5.0 (compatible; Googlebot / 2.1; + // www.google.com/bot.html)
At this point, activate the user agent from the extension button by choosing the Googlebot button and open the site that was blocked starting from its homepage to navigate it without any block.
The Paywall bypass should also work on Chrome with the User-Agent Switcher and Referer control extensions.
