Instead of following the formula of incremental changes over time, while maintaining the basic game structure, AoEO is an online multiplayer game, like a browser game but with a graphical client.
Evolution is therefore a race against other players with whom you can team up to face other factions and rule the world.

After registration you will be asked to choose a kingdom to join, that is the server to join.
We will therefore start with a colony that will have to found the capital city and that will have to grow in culture, militarily and in technology.

As a game it looks a bit like Farmville, in the care and growth of its people and a bit like Travian, the famous browser browser game.
Even though it is a game with a graphical client, Age Of Empires online is based on the time that really passes and marks the phases of the game.

A fun game phase is that of the Quest, timed missions that may involve the creation of a farm or the construction of defense towers. Completed quests bring upgrades to your civilization so, for example, if you pass the mission where you have to build 10 farms in 10 minutes, you can then build 10 farms in 9 minutes. For some missions, collaboration with other players is required otherwise they are almost impossible to overcome.
In AOEO there are levels to be reached and the more you level up the more you have advantages in the game and you can unlock technologies, weapons and military units. To gain experience points you must complete missions, defeat enemies and destroy their buildings.
You can use your points to purchase new buildings and more powerful fighters.
