Even if we talk about the internet and the world wide web, there are curiosities that not everyone knows about what happens on the internet in the world every day. We are not talking so much about usage statistics but about things and facts about the internet that few know, very important and indicative of the world in which we live.

1) Difference between internet and web
Many may think that the internet and the world wide web are the same thing, while it is not.
The Internet has been present for many more years than the web (since the invention of the first modem in 1958) and is the infrastructure that connects millions of computers around the world.
The World Wide Web, which would not exist without the Internet, is instead the system of hypertext documents (of pages and sites) accessible on the Internet.
2) Billions of indexed sites, even more not indexed
To date, there are approximately 2.3 billion web pages indexed by search engines according to this chart.
The Deep web, i.e. websites that are not indexed and cannot be found through search engines, is estimated to be 500 times larger than the indexed web, at least according to this infographic and according to Google which says it has indexed only 0.004% of the web.
3) The fastest countries in the world
The world's fastest internet network is in Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan.
It may surprise you that Romania and Latvia are the two European countries where you navigate faster and are fourth and sixth in the world rankings.
Italy is last in Europe and has a lower internet connection quality and speed even in several African countries (source).
4) XXX
About 1/3 of the research done on the internet in the world concerns pornography.
65% of the photos on the internet are of naked women, but some say that this percentage reaches 80%.
The rest, in my opinion, are cats.
5) Couples
About 20% of married couples in the world have met on the internet
6) People connected to the internet
According to the website stats live there are now 2.9 billion people connected on the internet (out of 7 billion total population).
Considering that there are 1.4 billion people registered on Facebook, it means that almost 50% of users who surf the internet are also registered on Facebook.
7) The first site in the world
The first website on the internet in history is the page //info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html which is still online today.

8) Browsers
Google Chrome is now the most used browser in the world among all the browsers available for all computers.
The first browser in history was called Mosaic .
9) The most used application on smartphones
The most used app on smartphones is Google Maps, as already seen in a previous article on the most used applications in the world.
10) The most searched things
Facebook is the most searched word of all time in the world and in Italy according to Google Trends.
Youtube is the second while, in Italy, the most searched normal word is the Weather.
