Quick download with uTorrent and optimize BitTorrent

The program for Windows, Mac and Linux PC uTorrent or MicroTorrent is the most popular application through which we can open peer to peer .torrent files .
The meaning of a Peer To Peer or P2P network is that of a connection between computers that share files and can exchange them, without going through a central node.
Through p2p, the same file can be downloaded to my PC with the download from 10 or more other connected computers, piece by one, piece by another, faster and faster if there are more and more sources.
BitTorrent is the name of the protocol used for the exchange of files over the network, while the torrent file is the one that contains the references for downloading a file.
Through a BitTorrent client, the torrent file downloaded from the internet opens in order to access the download of the real file, the desired one.
We have dedicated a special article on how Torrent download works and how they download .
UTorrent has been for several years the best client to download torrent files, simple to use, light and safe.
Today UTorrent has become a commercial program, which you can still download for free, which remains the most used and even if there is no lack of free and ad-free alternatives to uTorrent.
UTorrent and also the other BitTorrent clients can however be configured and optimized to download faster in P2P thanks to its numerous options and settings.
This guide was written by putting together the information provided by BitTorrent program developers in their forums.
There are no secret tricks, only the fundamental principles of a correct configuration of a Bittorrent program such as Utorrent, with the aim of obtaining the maximum download and download speed of the files.
1) First, open the UTorrent port on the router .
We have already written a guide on how to forward and open ports in a router.
The port is a default value of a program, which must then be added to the router to allow that program to send and receive data from the internet.
The port used by the uTorrent program is found in the options
The port uTorrent uses is in Options -> Settings -> Connection.
The UPnP and NAT options must be left selected, while the random port option must not be activated.
Then write down the port number, go to the router configuration panel (as explained in the guide to forward the ports connected a few lines above) and open the TCP and UDP port in the router.
Regarding the door number, it is advisable to avoid the use of a door within the range 6881-6999.
These port numbers are those predefined by many bittorrent programs and could therefore be blocked or controlled.
The safest choice is a number in the range 49160-65534.
2) Put uTorrent or the Bittorrent client among the exceptions of the Windows Firewall .
This setting is automatic and should be activated during installation.
If not, you can check it in the rules of the Windows Firewall.
Obviously, if another firewall has been installed on the PC, UTorrent must also be among the exceptions.
3) To optimize the speed of UTorrent (or other BitTorrent program), you must first calculate the speed of your internet connection.
The most important setting is to tell uTorrent to use only up to 80% of the total upload capacity.
In fact, if UTorrent used 100% of the upload bandwidth, the downloads would be negatively affected.
First of all, therefore, you need to calculate the internet speed using, for example, the site speedtest.net and check the upload speed.
Before taking the test, on the speedtest site, press on the top of Settings and change the unit of measurement by putting Kbps and press on Save .
Before taking the test, stopping any program it downloads transfers data to the internet.
Once we have the value of the average upload speed for the internet connection, open the Azureus calculation tool that will work for all BitTorrent clients, including uTorrent.
This calculator will automatically give the correct data to adjust the various options in uTorrent or other programs.
Then write the upload value of speedtest in the Kilobit field and press Enter to notice that the other numbers on the page change automatically.
In UTorrent, open the options, then the settings and to the Band section by changing the values such as those of the Azureus calculator page.
In particular, change the numbers:
Maximum UL upload speed
Maximum number of global connections
Maximum number of peers connected per torrent
Number of torrent upload slots
Following the same system, go to Settings> Queue and change the values:
Maximum number of active downloads
Maximum number of active torrents
4) Activate encryption
Encryption was designed primarily to counteract the interference of internet connection providers, called ISPs or Internet Service Providers, with BitTorrent.
Then activate the encryption in Options> Settings> BitTorrent, leaving all the options in UTorrent as they are (with DHT activated) and changing only the option to activate the outgoing encryption, leaving the possibility of unencrypted incoming connections, so as not to limit yourself too much .
5) Optimize the reception of data of the ADSL connection on your Windows system and, optionally, assign the highest priority to UTorrent with the program to manage the network bandwidth.
6) In the case of video downloads, to see the preview during the download, then to verify that the file is correct even while you are downloading it, you can use VLC Player.
Finally, always remember to choose torrents that have a high seed to peer ratio, possibly 100%, which means being a fully available torrent.
For example, if there are 30 seeders and 70 peers for a Torrent, the ratio is 30% and the download will be faster than one with 500 seeders and 2500 peers (20% ratio).
