Starting from Android Marshmallow, it can happen to see a curious error in the form of a message on the screen which is however quite difficult to understand what it means. This is the " Screen overlay detected " error, which does not allow some applications to start and therefore becomes rather annoying, especially since the message is not at all clear what should be done to solve it.
In fact, luckily, it's a fairly easy fix once you know what the cause is.
In essence it is an overlay on the screen, a feature introduced in Android 6 Marshmallow that allows applications to stand on top of other apps.
For example, Facebook Messenger can use the typical chat heads making them always appear in the foreground on what is being done.
If an app, which is with the Overlay in operation, requires the modification of a new authorization, Android denies it with the consequent error message " Screen overlay detected ".
So if you install a new application asking for this permission and in the meantime an app like Facebook Messenger was showing the notification with the "chat head" facet, then the Overlay error may appear.
Sometimes, when this error is generated, you can touch a link to open the settings which leads directly to the " Move to Other Apps " menu, which is the one to manage this type of authorization.
Manually it would be necessary to find the responsible app and give this permission or deny it to everyone by moving the switch to do it first.
To recognize the app causing the error, you can look at recently installed apps, Facebook Messenger, Twilight or other apps that make the screen darker and so on or even Google Translate, Telegram, Twitter, VLC etc.
To see the list of apps that use the Move authorization on other apps, from the list of apps, press at the top of the drop-down menu to view only the Apps with authorization .
If you are unable to resolve it is worth activating the permission to all or, better, none, and then reactivating the authorization as it is requested.
In case you want to do a manual control, the menu of Move to other apps can be found, in standard Android phones, by going to Settings> Apps, pressing on the gear button at the top and then on Moving to other apps .
From the list, tap on Active and filter only those that use authorization.
On Samsung devices, the menu is found by pulling down the notification bar, then pressing on Settings (the gear wheel), then going to Apps> Application manager and then to More .
On Samsung, the switch for each app is direct and does not open in a separate tab.
On LG smartphones, on the other hand, in the Applications menu you have to touch the button in the other with three dots and then go to Configure .
