Rename many files and photos together with criteria and rules

This short article to meet a particular need for organizing files on your computer. Personally, I have often found myself renaming files, for example, music files or photographs downloaded from a digital camera, by hand, one by one, putting a very boring life into it. Since everything is found on the internet, it is enough to come up with the right search to find the solution to the problem of renaming many files, doing it in one go with a software. The files can therefore have a name based on the date of creation, on metadata or id3 or Exif tags or on the basis of custom criteria.
First, however, it is good to know a trick that works on Windows without using external programs to rename files quickly: press on a file to be renamed with the right mouse button and choose the rename option. When writing the new name, instead of pressing Enter, press the TAB key on the keyboard to move on to renaming the next file and so on.

1) PowerRename is one of the features of the Microsoft Powertoys multifunction program for Windows 10 . Once this tool is installed, simply select the files to which you want to change the name and then press the right mouse button to activate PowerRename. You can easily set policies and replace characters in the file names by changing them together in one go.
2) D-FileMU is a small and light free 125 KB portable program, that is, which does not require installation but can also be used directly from a USB stick.
The work of renaming multiple files can be divided into three phases:
In the first phase, the program lists 17 different ways in which it is possible to rename various files, among which:
- Change between upper and lower case in the file name
- Change the extensions, the letters to the right of the point (eg pippo.jpg)
- Add certain strings to the beginning or end of the name
- Add numbers in sequence to the beginning or end of the name
- Change the file attribute between "read only" "hidden" or "archived"
- Fully rename a file
- Delete the first or last n characters from the names
The second step involves selecting one or more files to be renamed according to the criteria chosen before. You can choose files individually or all files with a certain extension or all files in a folder. Therefore, the files can be selected from multiple different parts and from different folders on the hard drive. Finally, the program lists the files that need to be renamed giving the possibility to see a preview. By clicking on the " Perform Changes " button the files are all renamed and the operation is completed. Eventually a window will inform you that the program has made changes to the file. If there were errors during the process, another notification window will appear to say that there have been errors and ask if you want to view the error file or not. If all goes well, you can see the summary with all the renamed files in the process file.
3) Another fast, small and free software is called ReNamer .
Renamer allows you to choose the files to be renamed and the rule to follow in the renaming process. To create the rules, this software offers more alternatives because there is a sort of selector Wizard that offers greater flexibility and variety. For example, you can name the files by adding a date or by adding strings in the middle of the name and many other variables. Here too you can see a preview or preview of the renamed files before proceeding with the actual change.
4) Advanced Renamer works really well and is easy to use to rename files all at once, according to custom criteria.
5) FocusOn Renamer allows you to change the name of many files together according to a certain criterion which may be the date or a part of a name. The program has many criteria already set, only to be selected from the drop-down menu and has options to change, in the names of the chosen files, upper case, lower case, first letter and much more. There is also a find and replace function, to change the wrong names in one go.
6) Inviska Rename is a free file renaming program that allows you to change the name of many files together on the basis of ID3 tags or Exif photo data.
7) ContextReplace is a simple program to rename files and folders together as you would with words in Microsoft Word. This tool is integrated into the right-click menu of Windows, therefore, just press the right button on a folder to find the Replace option that allows you to search for all files with a certain name by changing them with a different name.
8) WIA-Loader is used to automatically rename photos imported from a camera on the computer .
WIA-Loader is an excellent tool that allows you to import photos from your digital camera into user-defined folders, organized by date and / or keywords, and rename them, all in one go. If you connect your digital camera using the supplied USB cable or use a memory card reader to transfer images, WIA-Loader will always be able to detect it. WIA-Loader supports all common types of images, including RAW files from each camera.
9) Namexif is, however, a small program that automatically renames photos based on date. Each image will therefore have a name like 2015-08-15 18.05.27.jpg
10) Finally I remember the explorer alternative resources ExplorerXP, a multipurpose tool for Windows among whose functions there is also that of renaming the file.
