To register a local landline number, with the prefix of an Italian city, usable in an absolutely normal way and without limitations, 5 minutes are enough and no expense . In fact, you can activate an Italian number for free with the Messagenet Free Number service, simple to configure, which allows you to be called using the SIP protocol and VOIP (which is not possible with Skype in Italy).
Put simply, you can be called to the new landline number obtained from your computer or, better, from your Android smartphone or iPhone (and also from iPad or other tablets) or from a VOIP telephone device that you can buy for 30 Euros and which acts like a regular landline telephone.

To activate a new phone number for free, connect to the Messagenet website and register by providing a correct email address and a mobile number that must be verified.
Open your email box and click the link to confirm the address, then enter the code that Messagenet sends via SMS to the indicated mobile number.
Complete the registration by giving legal consent to the legal conditions of the service and providing all the personal details: name, surname, home address, city, province and postal code.
Since in order to have an Italian landline number you need to be an Italian citizen, the data must be entered correctly and the tax code (or VAT number) must also be written.
At the end you automatically get a phone number that will be of the type 0692123123 if you have chosen the prefix of the city of Rome.
Via email you also receive an email confirming the activation of the number and providing some data such as: a URI number (SIP client identification), the password and the address of the Sip Server.
All you need to call this number is an Android smartphone or an iPhone and the MTalk app.

For Samsung and Android smartphones you can also use the Zoipier application which automatically configures itself and works beautifully. After installing Zoiper, in the initial configuration, just add the Messagenet account as a VOIP service to be selected in the list of World Providers . Without then writing the parameters by hand, just log in to Messagenet using the URI number and password received via email. CSip Simple can integrate with the main app to make calls and can remain active always or only when the mobile phone is connected to the Internet via Wifi.
Both on the iPhone and on a Samsung Galaxy or another Android phone, you can make and receive calls to the landline number registered with Messagenet both with Wifi and with 3G connection which, in my test, was absolutely perfect as if it were a normal phone call. It goes without saying that the landline number will be reachable even if you are abroad and the caller will always pay the local rate, without additional costs .
Calls can also be made and received from the computer, using a program such as XLite.
If, on the other hand, you want to use the landline number as your real home phone number, you can buy a VOIP phone that supports the SIP standard protocol for every day, at a price of 50 Euros.
With Messagenet you can also make phone calls or send SMS from your PC or mobile phone or VOIP device by buying credit on the official website and paying rates that are roughly the same as Skype or other online telephony services. Buying credit is useful both if you use the service as a landline phone at home and when you go abroad to make calls at much lower prices than the normal call rates. The only limitation of this service is that the registered landline number can be deactivated by Messagenet if after 30 days it is not used to receive or call.
