What is the default gateway: IP 192.168.1.254 or 192.168.1.1

The default gateway is a very important parameter for configuring the internet connection on the computer.
The name gateway refers to the device that governs and manages the network, which works to allow devices to communicate with devices from another network.
For example, if the computer requests to view a web page, the request is first made through the default gateway before leaving the local network to reach the Internet.
In a simple way, the default gateway can be considered as an intermediate device between the local network and the Internet .
Although although there are also internal gateways for communication within a local area network, the default gateway often connects the local area network to the Internet and is used to route traffic to all clients on a network.
In practical terms, when asked to indicate the default gateway (usually on Windows PCs and smartphones it is configured automatically), we mean to write the IP address of the router, which is almost always the same in every network in the world : 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254 .
Knowing the IP address of the default gateway on your home or corporate network is important if you want to correctly solve a network problem or access router management based on the web interface.
In most cases, the IP address of the default gateway is the private IP address assigned to the router, the one the router uses to communicate with the LAN.
The IP address of the default gateway is stored in the Windows network settings and is really easy to find in any version of Windows, including Windows 10, Windows 8 and Windows 7.
Note: The instructions below will only work to find the IP address of the default gateway on wired and wireless networks and small corporate networks. Larger networks, with more than a single router and simple network hubs, may have more than one gateway and more complicated routing.
Open the Control Panel accessible via the Start menu, press on the Network and Internet link or, in icon view, on the Network and Sharing Center .
If you are using Windows 10 or Windows 8.1, you can reduce this process by using the " Network Connections " shortcut that appears by pressing the Windows-X keys together or by pressing the right mouse button on the start button at the bottom left.
At this point, look for the word Change card settings and press on it to find the list of network connections, including the one currently used to surf the internet.
In the Network Connections screen, locate the one for which you want to view the IP of the default gateway, which is usually labeled as Ethernet or Local area connection or, in the case of a wireless network, as Wi-Fi or Wireless network connection .
Then double-tap on the network connection to see an Ethernet Status or Wi-Fi Status dialog where you can just press the Details button to find the IP of the default Gateway IPv4 and also the default gateway IPv6.
If no gateway is indicated, it means that the connection is not active.
Those who know how to use the DOS command prompt can open it from the Start menu and run the ipconfig command.
This command allows you to see the IP of the default gateway directly.
On a Mac you can open the Terminal and type the command netstat -nr | grep default
As you can see, the IP of the default Gateway is always the same for almost every router and 99% is one of these:
192.168.1.1
192.168.0.1
192.168.1.254
Writing the gateway address on a web browser such as Chrome or Firefox you access the management interface of the router.
One of these IPs is definitely predefined in TPLink, DLink, Netgear routers and also in Fastweb, Telecom and other routers.
If you do not change the router's IP address or if your computer connects directly to a modem to access the Internet, the IP address of the default gateway used by Windows will never change.
You may need to know the IP address of the default gateway in case of network problems, in case you have to configure the network manually by setting a fixed IP on the PC or if you need to make changes to the router.
