99% of users use Microsoft Publisher for desktop publishing (DTP), i.e. for the creation, layout and production of printed material dedicated to editorial or amateur publishing (such as books, newspapers, magazines, invitations, various printed matter and brochures ), using a computer.
Publisher differs from Microsoft Word in that it is oriented towards graphics and the ethical aspect rather than on plain text.
With Publisher and the programs we're going to see, newsletters, magazines, books, posters, brochures and interactive and animated PDF presentations can also be produced.
You can also insert 3D polygonal images and you can apply photo editing effects to make the work created pleasing to the eye.
You can also write on text boxes to be inserted in nice frames and backgrounds or inside polygonal shapes.
There are 4 free alternative programs to Microsoft Publisher :
1) LibreOFfice Draw, the real alternative to Publisher, to create any printing project such as flyers, brochures, tickets, invitations and magazines of all kinds.
Draw is included in LibreOffice, which is free and open source, therefore usable also for commercial reasons.
2) PagePlus is a program distributed by Serif whose latest version costs about 80 Euros.
If the latest version is paid for, the previous version can be downloaded and used for free and is called PagePlus SE .
PagePlus SE contains different formats with which to produce publications and, during installation, the user also wonders if European or American standards are preferred (for the paper size).
PagePlus SE can therefore be used for the design of all printed publications, even for printing an envelope of a letter!
Most of the features of PagePlus SE are also present in Publisher, and several users report that on PagePlus SE it is also easier to use to create and print something more complex than a simple greeting card.
For example, instead of having to go through the context menus of Publisher, you can specify the position of an object through a bar that allows the user to enter numbers that indicate information such as the position, size and angle of objects .
Unfortunately, the creation of PagePlus SE cannot be exported in such standard formats as PDF or EPS.
On the Serif website there are different types of designs that can be imported on PagePlus.
3) Scribus is the best and most popular replacement for Publisher, and it is opensource and therefore free, in its versions for Linux, for Mac and for Windows.
As for Scribus, there is an excellent and short manual in Italian from Paolettopn.it to use the program in the best way and to take full advantage of its features.
Other uses include making corporate materials, flyers, small posters, and other documents that require a flexible layout. Scribus has even been used to produce entire books.
Scribus supports many of the most popular graphic formats, including PDF, EPS and the SVG format typical of vector graphics.
The presence of the GhostScript "package" is required to process the previews and export to PDF and SVG.
4) SpringPublisher, available for Windows PC also in a free version, is a bit of a simplified version of Publisher, excellent for creating flyers, flyers and tickets to be printed.
