The Windows desktop can be changed not only in the background image, but also in the colors, the design of the menus and the icons by changing the theme that is the package that includes all these elements. As seen, it has always been possible to improve the appearance of Windows by downloading themes and visual styles from different sites.
With the themes for Windows 7 Microsoft has started to distribute themes from a special page of the official website, which lists the themes divided into categories and allows you to download them with a click on the download button.
Now, one of the best features of Windows 10 concerns the download of new themes, which can be done directly from the Windows 10 settings, in a simple and clear way.

To choose a new graphic theme to give to the desktop of your PC with Windows 10 updated with the Creators Update of April 2017, just go to Settings> Personalization> Themes .
From here you can immediately view the installed themes and change from one to the other by applying them immediately.
This settings page is similar to the old control panel background customization page which is now gone forever.
The real news on this settings page is represented by the " Buy other themes in the Store " button.
The store opens a large gallery of themes to download, currently almost 200 to choose from, all free.
You can click on any of the themes to open its presentation page and press the Get button to download it to your PC.
After downloading this new theme will appear in the list of installed themes on the settings page and you can click to apply it to your desktop.
Themes can include one or even all of these four elements: one or more desktop backgrounds, a color for the menus, a set of sounds, and a series of mouse cursors. Most of the themes in the Store only include a series of backgrounds that automatically change and a color of the windows, thus leaving intact sounds and cursors. To remove an installed theme you must first select another one and then press on it with the right button and use the option to delete it.
On the other hand, if you right-click on the installed and applied theme, you can save it as a .desktopthemepack file that you can send or share to others.
From the theme customization settings page it is possible to modify, without downloading a new theme, sounds and cursors, backgrounds and colors .

The Color option allows you to select a color type for the different elements of the windows or to change it automatically based on the background. From here you can also set the dark theme for Windows 10 Settings windows, choose whether to use transparency and then whether to apply color to the Start menu and title bars too.
The pages to change the sounds of Windows and that of the cursors and mouse pointers are, however, still in the control panel menu, identical to those of Windows XP, to be clear.
Note that in Windows 10, if you log in with a Microsoft account on multiple Windows 10 PCs, the themes (and therefore backgrounds, colors and everything else) automatically synchronize between the various PCs so that the chosen one is applied on all the desktop.
Changing the theme on one PC will also change automatically on the other computers and when you access a new PC in the future, it will automatically use the chosen theme. If you don't like this type of behavior and want to change the theme of each PC by making them all different, you can go to Settings> Accounts> Synchronize the settings and deactivate the theme between the synchronization settings.
