File not opening, unknown extension or if using the wrong program

On Windows, when you want to open any file, there can be two problems:
1) It is opened with the wrong program and does not work
2) It does not open and a nice window appears saying "can not open this file " and asks " How do I open this file? " Leaving the user the choice between searching the web for the program or choosing it from the installed programs.
The type of a file is highlighted on windows by a three-letter extension visible to the right of the name, preceded by a dot.
This extension, by default, is therefore not seen to notice the differences between the files, you have to go to the options of any folder (from the top menu choose Tools -> Folder Options) and go to the "View" menu.
From this menu you go down to the " hide extensions for known file types " item and remove the flag, press " Apply " and then " OK ".
Now, every file name is seen with this type of writing: "pomhey.txt" where txt is the extension that distinguishes the file type.
For some files, without extension, the file is seen with a white icon and cannot be opened unless you choose the right program.
Sometimes then, it happens that a file of a type is opened with a wrong program, which has nothing to do with it and therefore seems not to work.
Another frequent case occurs when, for example, a friend or colleague sends us a file with an unknown extension to our computer and you do not have any program to open and view that file.
Going in order, we can say, in our example, that a txt file is opened from the Notepad because this setting is set by default on Windows, but, you can safely choose that the txt file must be opened with another program such as Notepad ++ which is much better and more useful to use for reading and editing text files.
So, to modify the program that opens a type of file, generally, by clicking on it with the right button, you can see the item " Open with .. " -> " Program " and the list of recommended applications opens; by clicking on Browse and browsing the program folder, you will find, if installed, the Notepad ++. exe program and choose the one to open the file.
There are times, however, when this option does not appear, and, especially if a file is opened by the wrong program, it can become a problem and you need to make a small change on the log file.
Go to the " Start " button -> " Run " -> write Regedit and click ok.
Navigate through the key tree to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ FileExts \ [file extension] \ OpenWithList entry
For example, if you want to delete the program that opens a foo.txt file, look at the txt voltage.
On the right panel, you can click on the program (the "data" column) that you don't want to use to open a txt file, with the right button and choose "Delete".
Once this key is deleted, by opening the foo.txt file, you will no longer see that program among the recommended applications.
When you receive a file with an unknown extension, which you do not know with which program to open, it can be useful to use an automatic tool that allows you to find the program to open an unknown file .
In conclusion, I remember the article with the guide to hide a folder or files from the computer by putting them inside an image.
Very trivially, it can be deduced from this post, that, to hide a file on a computer, such as a photograph that you do not want to be searched or seen, just change its extension, renaming the file and putting an unknown one to make it that that file is not opened by anyone.
Not even an expert could easily trace the type of file because, even if it found it, it should have at least the suspicion that that unknown thing is a hidden image.
