Flickr, Yahoo's photo sharing service, has become the perfect site to backup all or most of the photos you have on your computer for free, so that you can keep a safe, even private, online copy. This is possible thanks to the huge free space of 1 Terabyte (1000 GB) in Flickr for photos and videos and the removal of previous usage limits.
Flickr therefore becomes the ideal cloud service to save your photos online safely and today it is absolutely embarrassing to compare with other services such as Dropbox (2GB) or Google Drive (5 or 15GB).
Flickr.com allows you to upload online photos of less than 200MB in size which can be limiting just for professional photographers who are dealing with RAW images.
Let's see how to upload multiple photos to Flickr quickly from the PC and how to synchronize photos on the computer so as to make an automatic online backup .
First of all, go to your Flickr.com profile, in the settings, and change the default privacy so that all new photos and albums will be uploaded with private visibility.
Also change the visibility of photos to prevent them from being found by strangers.
No one else will then be able to search and view our saved images for backup purposes and not for online sharing.
To upload photos to the internet, Flickr has its own Upload page, which is not suitable for uploading hundreds and thousands of photos simultaneously .
To do this you can use three alternative programs that make it easier to transfer and copy albums on the internet, in the Flickr cloud.
1) The official tool is the Flickr Desktop Uploadr, available for Windows and Mac, last updated in 2009, but still good and working on Windows 8 as well.
with this simple tool you can simply drag the folders from the desktop onto the uploader which automatically extracts all the image files from the folders and subfolders.
From the Tools -> Preferences menu you can change the privacy of the images before adding new photos to the upload queue.
2) Windows Live Photo or Photo Gallery, Microsoft's Windows Essentials program, supports uploading photos to Flick.
From the main interface, you can select all the photos you want and then press the button with the Flickr logo on the top right.
In order to work, Windows Live Photo needs the authorization to be granted with a security code by logging in to Flickr and following the procedure.
The only limitation is that, for an old setting, it does not allow you to upload videos to flickr.
3) Flickr Schedulr is another good alternative to the official uploader because it allows you to set a schedule for uploading photos and videos to Flickr.
If you want to automate the upload of photos from your PC to Flickr so that every photo on your computer is synchronized online on the huge space offered by the Yahoo photo service, you have to use a different program.
PhotoSync makes Flickr similar to Dropbox, capable of synchronizing images between computers and Flickr.
The program integrates with Windows and creates a special folder on the hard disk so that all the files and folders that are added to this folder will be automatically saved as a "set" on Flickr.
Synchronization is, by default, two-way therefore if an online photo is added or deleted, it also appears or disappears from the PC and vice versa.
However, there is the possibility of preventing an album or photos deleted on Flickr from being also deleted from the hard disk.
PhotoSync is the easiest-to-use program for backing up photos to your computer and creating a copy online and also for downloading photos .
Every new photo is uploaded online.
By default, all photos uploaded online privately.
If installed on multiple computers, all photos will be synchronized and then automatically downloaded from Flickr to the special PhotoSync folder.
Another program to synchronize photos is FlickrSync for Windows which allows you to synchronize photos and folders without having to move them to a specific folder .
The application displays all the folders on the tree computer and just select the ones you want to upload online.
The sets will have the same name as the folders.
Synchronization is always one-way, so that the images on the PC are never deleted.
