What is RAM? What is memory for on a computer?

Most people know that in computers, as well as in tablets and smartphones, there is a very important component called RAM or Random Access Memory. Although this numerical value is taken into strong consideration when we choose a new device (the more RAM the better it is!), Few really know how it works inside a computer or any other modern device.
Without writing a tedious technical article, here we will answer some basic questions to understand what RAM is going to discover clearly and within everyone's reach, what it is used for, how we can choose the best RAM and how we can prevent it from running out on the most beautiful.
At the end we will also show you the more technical and specific articles, which we can read in order to choose the new RAM to be applied to a slightly old computer.

RAM questions and answers

In order to really understand what RAM is for, we will answer some specific questions on the subject, so that we can get the answer we were looking for without having to read too many notions.

Because RAM clears up every time you shut down your computer ">

What is the right amount of RAM for a modern PC?

In order to have a fast PC in any scenario, the minimum RAM must be 8 GB ; if we want to play or open complex graphics, virtualization and photo / video editing programs, we recommend immediately to bring the PC RAM up to 16 GB .

When you increase the amount of RAM in your PC, you increase the space available to load data without pouring it onto your hard disk and your computer goes faster .
In this regard, we invite you to read our guide on How to increase RAM and add new memory to your PC .

We can save the data contained in RAM on the hard disk "> In this case we can use the hibernation features present on all recent versions of Windows: by hibernating the computer the contents of all RAM memory will be saved inside a special file of the hard disk, ready to be restored the next time the system is started.
In order to hibernate your PC with Windows 10, we open the Control Panel in the Start menu, then go to the Hardware and Sound -> Energy saving options path. From this window we click on the left side on the item Specify what happens when the lid is closed and, in the new window that will appear, we first click on Change the settings currently not available, then we put the check mark on the item Hibernation .

Click on Save changes below ; from now on we can save the contents of the RAM on the hard disk by right clicking on the Start button, going to the Close or disconnect menu and finally clicking on Hibernate .
Note: in the screen we showed you a little while ago, we can also start PC hibernation automatically when we close the laptop monitor or when we press the power button (on notebooks and stationary), also choosing when to apply hibernation ( when we are on battery or connected to the mains).

How to notice a RAM problem "> MemTest (GUI) and Memtest86 (testale, works outside the operating system).

These programs have been dealt with in depth in our guide for PC RAM Test Verification with Windows memory diagnostics .
If instead we fear that the RAM is damaged but the symptoms seem to be less evident than usual, we advise you to read our guide to the Symptoms of faulty, damaged or broken RAM problems .
