Should I take the Telecom modem or buy a new one?

Many Internet service providers such as Telecom, when signing up for a subscription, ask if they also want to take their modem with an addition to the monthly fee of 3 Euros or a little more.
This modem is Telecom branded and also works as a wireless router to connect to wifi from any device, computer or mobile phone, at home.
Obviously, taking the modem from the telephone / internet company, you don't need to buy a router.
The question then is: it is better to take the modem provided by the telephone companies (such as Telecom, Fastweb or others) or you can do it yourself, save those 3 Euros per month and buy a separate and more powerful modem / router "> ADSL Internet coverage: checks Telecom, Fastweb and all operators
Because the modem of Telecom or any other internet operator is convenient
The telephone and internet operators supply the Modem / Router to their subscribers to sell a turnkey subscription, which after delivery and configuration made by the technician, works without the customer having to do anything.
The modem manages the Internet connection, creates an internal and protected Wi-Fi network.
All the customer has to do is turn on the computer and connect to the internet, without having to read instructions or call the call center.
Having a combined modem / router is also good for not having multiple devices at home and therefore for limiting the accumulation of wires and cables and electrical outlets.
The main advantage of the modem supplied with the subscription from Telecom, Fastweb and other telephone companies, in addition to the greater simplicity is that of support .
If something goes wrong and the internet doesn't work, the customer can have one more weapon by saying that the modem is theirs.
If instead you use your own modem, the assistance has the pretext to blame us for any malfunctions.
If the device was supplied by your ISP, he will solve the internet problems in all respects.

Note also that even if the modem / router is combined, it is possible to disable the router functionality.
This will cause the modem to work only to provide internet access.
You can then connect your own separate router to the modem, with an Ethernet cable via the LAN port, to have your own home network and make the configurations you want.
Even if it is not possible to disable the router functions, you can still connect your router to the LAN port and create a Wi-Fi network separate from the existing one.
However, this is not ideal because the new network would be behind the existing one and it becomes difficult to do operations such as port forwarding.
Because it may be better to have your own modem / router
The main advantage of having your own router is to have a more powerful one with additional functions than the one provided by the provider.
For example, you may want a dual band modem with the 5GHz band, which supports faster 802.11ac wifi, with USB ports and support for the printer and which provides more wifi signal coverage.
An advanced router can also have multiple configuration options (see also the top 10 options for configuring a wifi router).
A router can also cost less than Telecom or other companies which costs more than 3 Euros per month for 24 months.
Just look at Amazon, to the Top Seller ranking of modems, to find TPLink's combined modems / routers very powerful and full of additional functions that do not cost more than 50 Euros.
These are modems that configure themselves and that just attach to the telephone socket (without forgetting the filter).
So in the end it all depends on how much you want to be calm with any problems and how much you want to personalize your home network.
The combined router / modem supplied by Telecom or other companies is only easier to set up and use.
On the other hand, if you want the latest wireless hardware technology, if you want additional functions or more signal strength, it is better to take a new device, which however remains simple to configure.
