Configure Outlook.com and Yahoo on Microsoft Outlook or other email programs

When I listed the best sites to create an Email address I highlighted the three major email providers: Gmail, Yahoo Mail and Outlook.com which are the most used in the world and which provide a much better service than any other site.
Therefore advising to open an account with one of these services (maybe even keeping the old e-mail address see, for example the guides for "Sending Mail from Gmail with another address" and "Sign up for Outlook.com without changing address"), let's now see how it is also possible to use a program such as Microsoft Outlook, Thunderbird or other Email clients, both from computer and mobile phone, to send and receive Email from Outlook.com and Yahoo Mail .
For Gmail, the settings guide for Pop / Imap forwarding is in the article on how to configure Outlook with Gmail to receive and send mail from your PC
Although in this guide I used the Microsoft Outlook 2007 program on Windows PC but the procedure is also identical for Thunderbird or other mail programs (see the best email clients alternative to Outlook ), on other types of computers and on Android, iPhone mobile phones and all the other models.
Outlook.com or Yahoo Mail work very well to receive mail (see "Receive alerts on your computer for new incoming E-mail messages" and "Notify unread email messages on Chrome and Firefox" and then download it to your computer in a program like Outlook but require special configuration for sending mail.
The first preliminary step is identical for both Outlook.com (@ hotmail.com or @ outlook.com or @ live.com) e-mail addresses and Yahoo Mail (@ yahoo.it).
Then go to Tools -> Account Settings and press the " new " button to add the Outlook.com or Yahoo Mail address
Go Next to the first window by selecting Pop3 IMAP or HTTP and, in the second window, click below where it says " manually configure ... ".
Go Next, choose " Internet E-mail " and fill in the form that appears. Give your account a name, write your mail address and then, depending on the address used, fill in the fields of POP3 (incoming mail server) and SMTP (outgoing mail server) as follows:
1) Outlook.com (Hotmail)
If you have an email address such as (it can also be live.com, hotmail.it or outlook.com), to send and receive Email with Outlook you must write:
POP3 : pop-mail.outlook.com
SMTP : smtp-mail.outlook.com
Username : your full email address
Password : the one to access the account via the web.
Then press the Other settings button, click on the " outgoing mail server " tab and select the " SMTP server requires authentication " option using the same settings as the incoming mail.
Then go to the Advanced Settings tab and write
POP3 server port number : 995
select SSL encrypted connection option
SMTP port: 587 or 25
Type of encrypted connection: TLS .
That's it: press OK to confirm and then click the " Test Account Settings " button to verify that sending and receiving mail is working properly. Obviously, for this to work, there must be no network impediments such as corporate firewalls blocking the special ports of Outlook.com.
I would like to say that if you use the Windows Live Mail program as an e-mail client on your Windows PC, everything would be easier and automatically configured with Outlook.com instead of Outlook.
Outlook.com supports IMAP with different configuration .
2) Yahoo mail
If you have an email address like (I don't know if @ yahoo.com works), to send and receive mail with Outlook, you have to write on the general account card:
POP3 : pop.mail.yahoo.it or pop.mail.yahoo.com
SMTP : smtp.mail.yahoo.it or smtp.mail.yahoo.com
username : the login name in front of the @ (in my example: pomhey)
password : the one used to enter the account from the mail.yahoo.it website
Then click the " Other settings " button, go to the " outgoing mail server " tab, check the box " the SMTP server requires authentication " and then click " Login with ".
As username, this time write the full email address (eg ) and rewrite the password storing it.
In advanced settings put the following numbers on the doors :
POP3: 110 if it doesn't work, 995
SMTP: 465
For the type of encrypted connection select SSL (do not select the item " the server requires SSL encrypted connection "). Click on OK and test the account settings checking that the green V appears and there are no errors in sending and receiving messages.
If you set up different accounts in Outlook, to distinguish them and save the incoming mail in different positions, you have to click on Tools -> Account Settings, select the second one in the list and press on " change folder " at the bottom.
Press on " new Outlook data file ", then press on OK and give a name to the new pst file (for example hotmail.pst).
To configure other email accounts on Outlook, Thunderbird or other programs, you need to look at the various addresses of the providers' POP3 and SMTP servers and their ports (see the complete table of pop3, SMTP and imap for all email services) .
Some services disable the sending of emails from external programs but this does not happen for Gmail, Yahoo and Outlook.com.
