How to use the consumer connection in Windows 10, when and why

That of the connections on consumption is one of the many innovations introduced by Windows 8, improved a lot in Windows 10, especially following the various updates.
Windows 10 is obviously designed to surf without limits on PC, using the maximum download and upload bandwidth.
With the consumption connection, on the other hand, it is possible to limit the use of the network bandwidth and impose a limit on the amount of data downloaded from the internet.
This is very useful when you use a limited connection where you pay how much you surf, for example, when you use your mobile phone as a hotspot or a portable modem with a SIM card, internet sticks or other 3G or 4G HSDPA network devices.
Also, if you are using a Windows 10 PC, you can set a connection as " consumption ", so that this is not used for updating Windows and applications.
Setting up a pay-as-you-go connection prevents Windows from automatically using bandwidth and has the following effects :
- Disable automatic download of Windows updates from Windows Update (except for the critical ones, a few, which are downloaded anyway).
Updates can therefore only be downloaded manually.
- Disable automatic download of app updates from the Microsoft App Store.
Keep in mind though that desktop programs like Chrome, Firefox and others will continue to update normally.
- Disables peer-to-peer uploading of Windows updates, disabling the function that sends the downloaded update to other computers.
- The updating of the information displayed in the live buttons of the Start menu, such as weather or email, is limited or disabled.
- As for Windows 10's OneDrive, this no longer appears to respect the "connection on consumption" setting and syncs equally.
You will therefore have to go to the Onedrive settings to pause synchronization or to limit the network bandwidth.
How to set up a pay-as-you-go connection in Windows 10
To set a Wi-Fi connection as consumption, go to Settings> Network and Internet> Wi-Fi, press on the name of the Wi-Fi connection to which we are connected and then activate the option " Set as consumption connection ".
The same thing can also be done for an Ethernet network (from Settings> Network and internet> Ethernet, by pressing on the name of the connected network).
The consumption-based functionality only affects the Wi-Fi or Ethernet network we are connected to and Windows will remember this setting every time you use that network.
For other connections, if not set as consumption, there will be no bandwidth limitations and Windows 10 will resume automatically downloading updates and using other reserved features.
In Windows 10 you can also not set the connection on consumption, but set the maximum data taffico threshold for a connection, so that you can use it without going beyond the limits.
Going to Settings> Network and Internet> Data Consumption, press the drop-down menu to select the connection whose settings you want to change and then scroll down.
It will therefore be possible, for the chosen connection, to set the data threshold, monthly or consumption, in terms of GB or MB and with a monthly reset date.
In the same options screen, you can also activate the option to limit the background data of Windows and Apps.
