Programs to synchronize audio and video

Here we have collected all the programs, compatible with Windows and Mac, that we can use to synchronize the audio and video, so as not to hear that unpleasant "desync" effect on the film or TV series that we are viewing on the PC.

Avidemux

Avidemux is a free and open source program, available for Windows and Mac, able to solve the problem at the root, that is by moving the audio track within the file without having to re-encode everything.

After downloading the program, start it, click on Open video at the top then select the video on which to correct the audio. After a few seconds the video will be available in the interface, ready to be edited. Make sure that the Copy item is present in the Video output and Audio output sections, put the check mark on the Delay item and change the indicator next to it, so that we can anticipate or postpone the audio of the video (the value is expressed in ms, i.e. milliseconds).
After making this change, click on the bottom of Play and verify the preview of the video; if the problem is finally solved, quickly re-encode the video keeping the original format in the Output container field (we can choose MP4, MKV or AVI ), then click Save video at the top to save the film or video with the correct audio. Coding should take a few seconds, as everything is left unchanged at the codec level.

VLC

The most famous player that we can use to synchronize audio and video on our computer, without having to re-encode anything, is without a doubt VLC, available for free for Windows and for Mac.

In order to synchronize the audio with the video, we open VLC and click on Media -> Open file at the top to open the offending video. Let's go to a point in the video where you can immediately notice the delay or the advance of the audio (a dialogue or obvious background noises, such as closing or opening a door), let's pause it and click on Tools - > Track synchronization . A new program window will open, where we can choose the time to be synchronized, changing the parameter next to the Audio track synchronization item. We set a negative or positive tempo (as needed), then we resume playback to immediately notice the difference. We can also make this change during playback, so that we can immediately see the actual time to be corrected.

Yaai

Another free and open source program that we can use to synchronize audio and video on Windows, acting exclusively on movies in AVI format, is YAAI.

After downloading the program on our computer, start it, click Open, then select the video to be fixed. A double window will open with the integrated player and the program settings: let's go to the Sync Audio tab and use the buttons -1, +1, -0.01 and +0.01 (present in the Delay Video / Audio section ) to synchronize audio with video. After finding the right synchronization settings, we click Apply to apply the changes.

SyncView

Another valid free program that we can try on Windows, capable of synchronizing the audio of the videos, is SyncView.

To synchronize the audio of the videos in AVI or MPEG, we open the program, click on the Video bar at the top, select the video with the audio problem and, after loading, use the buttons in the Audio Sync section to be able to correctly synchronize the 'audio. To start playback and thus verify the perfect result, click on the bottom of Play and play a few seconds of the video, waiting for the arrival of a dialogue or background noise.

App to synchronize audio and video

If the problem occurs when we open the video on a smartphone or on our Smart TV, below we have collected the apps that allow you to synchronize the video to be played on the smartphone or to synchronize the video to be played in DLNA on the TV.

VLC Mobile

If we have to play the problematic video on our smartphone, we use the mobile version of VLC, available for free for Android and iPhone.

After opening the app and selecting the video to be played, we tap on the cartoon cloud icon (next to the back button), select the Audio delay item and press its + and - keys to correctly synchronize the audio to the inside the video.

MX Player (Android)

If we use an Android smartphone or tablet, we can also try the MX Player, considered by many to be the best in the category.

To correct the audio, open the app, select the offending video, then tap on the top of the three dots icon; to correct the audio let's go to Audio and enable AV Synchronization to correct the audio automatically; to perform the manual correction, let's go to Audio -> Synchronization and act on the proposed parameters.

Cast Server (Android)

The audio is not synchronized even when we play the video on the Smart TV "> Cast Server, available exclusively for Android.

After starting the app, we turn on the Smart TV, tap on the Cast symbol at the top right and then select the TV in the list displayed (if we use Chromecast or Fire TV Stick, they will also appear in the list).
After preparing the app, we select the source where the de-synchronized video is present (in the internal memory of the phone or on any DLNA multimedia server in the home network ), we open the video and, once the control window appears in the app, we tap at the top on the headphones icon. A new window will open where we can choose the synchronization time by enabling the button at the top and selecting the time to synchronize. If we did everything correctly, the chosen video will play without audio problems on the TV.

Conclusions

As we have been able to see, synchronizing the audio of our videos is quite simple and within everyone's reach: both if we have to fix a video in decoding or if we have to play it on a PC, smartphone or TV, we have indicated an app for you every need.
