Close popup with a click on Chrome and Firefox

Updated on 9.1.15
One of the most annoying things on the internet, for some people, is advertising.
However, advertising is what allows most websites to stay online and generally should not be blocked.
What is really annoying are the popup overlays or those advertisements that appear full screen above the site you are visiting.
These pop-ups, in most cases, have an X in the upper right corner to remove them, but it may happen that they do not have this X button and you just have to wait to make them go away.
On some sites these overlay pop-ups are invitations to subscribe to the newsletter or to like the Facebook page.
In another article we saw how to block pop-ups on Chrome which is useful, but also limiting that it can also block legitimate pop-ups on some sites (for example the website of the Chrome web store).
Much more easily, you can install a button on Chrome and Firefox to close any type of popup that appears above the site you want to visit .
The extension is called BehindTheOverlay and is available for Chrome and Firefox .
After installation, a button appears in the top right corner which, if pressed, looks for any pop-ups on the page you are visiting and closes them.
This button allows you to close any type of banner or popup that appears on the site, small or large, whether it is an advertisement or an invitation to click Like, with or without the closing X.
To see an example of these pop-ups you can visit a site like TGcom or, in certain hours, also the sites of Repubblica, Corriere and other very popular portals.
The extension is very light, non-intrusive, without a request for special authorizations and which is activated only on request, when the button is pressed.
There is no impact on browsing performance with BehindTheOverlay, as is the case with Adblock which injects many CSS rules to remove advertisements.
