How to calibrate the battery on Android

How many times have you happened to see the Android phone suddenly turn off, even if the charge level was still high (usually 40 or 50%). If the smartphone does not turn on again, you will have proof that the battery needs to be calibrated. Calibrating the battery means letting the system understand when it is truly discharged and when it is instead fully charged without making mistakes in reading the data. This will seem obvious, but the lack of calibration is instead one of the main problems of a battery that discharges soon. In fact, the computer's operating system may have saved wrong values in memory, making the battery charge when it is not yet.
We see in this guide how to calibrate the battery of an Android smartphone or tablet so that the battery can be fully charged.

To calibrate the battery in an Android smartphone there are several very effective methods, one that applies to all phones and another only to those unlocked with root. We always recommend starting with the manual method, since most of the time it is sufficient to achieve the set goal.
If the manual procedure does not work, then we can resort to apps and root permissions to try to recover the battery of the smartphone. However, consider that the calibration should only be done every now and then and it is not healthy for the battery, so let's apply it only in case of real need (no more than 2 times a year, only if it suddenly turns off and we don't know how to solve).

-Once successfully started, wait at least 10 minutes, then remove the charging cable used so far.
If everything went correctly, the phone will no longer suddenly turn off at a random charge level, but will only turn off when it reaches 0% charge. During the application of the procedure, we can also notice obvious signs of the battery's calibration: for example, by turning the smartphone back on we might notice that the phone, despite being under charge for a long time, still marks the battery being charged (usually 98 or 99%) . In this case it is better to wait much more than 10 minutes, until the battery is really 100% charged.
2) Manual method 2
If the previous procedure did not work, we made an "extreme" procedure to restore the correct battery reading.
We recommend making a full backup of the phone, since it will be restored to factory values; to make a good backup we recommend reading our dedicated guide -> Best Backup Apps for Android.
Once we have saved all the important data, we carry out this procedure (a variant of the previous one):
- We carry out the whole procedure seen in method 1
- When finished, we try to completely download the phone until it turns off and no longer shows signs of life
- Recharge it up to 100% off and wait 4 hours
- At the end of the 4 hours, we switch on the phone with the cable still inserted and proceed to reset the device ( Settings -> Backup and reset -> Factory data reset ).
- During recovery, we never unplug the charging cable
- Once restored, we insert a Google account and reconfigure our phone leaving the cable still inserted
- Let's spend 15 minutes, then finally unplug the charging cable
If everything went as expected, the reset phone should now read the correct battery charge, then turn off only when truly indicated (0% charge). After fixing the phone with this method, we recommend reading the following guide to extend the battery life on Android.

3) Method with root permissions
The procedures so far seen can be replicated using an application called Battery Calibration

After installing the battery calibration application, all we have to do is charge the smartphone, leaving it off, up to 100%. Having the battery fully charged and keeping the charging cable connected, we turn on the phone again, wait 10 minutes, open the Battery Calibration application, provide super user permissions and press the Start calibration button to calibrate the battery. The application rewrites the internal file of the Battery Stats system memorizing the moment when the battery is fully charged.
To end the procedure, disconnect the charger and use the phone until the battery is completely discharged, then recharge it 100% again to complete the calibration. If we do not know how to unlock root permissions, we refer you to reading our dedicated guide available below.
