Change or add Autoplay options when putting a cd or USB stick

When you put a CD in your computer's drive (Windows) or if you connect a USB stick, a window called AutoPlay appears showing the options available for using that USB stick or that CD.
Generally most people tend to close that window or to choose the "Browse files" option so as to enter the folders of the files contained in the USB stick or CD.
More experienced users may find it "tasty" to be able to modify the list of Autoplay options by adding or removing possible entries and actions.
For example, you could add a button to start an antivirus scan every time a USB stick is inserted so as to be sure that it is not a carrier of infections (as often happens).
Conversely, if there were too many voices in the Autoplay game, perhaps related to little used programs such as Nero or RealPlayer, they could be canceled.
The program object of this article is called Default Program Manager and it is used to change the associations of the files, to change the menus for specific types of files and also to modify or add the so-called " handlers " of the Autoplay, that is the options available when connect an external storage device to your computer or if you put a CD or DVD .
Default Program Editor is a free Windows tool that allows you to make changes to system registry keys using a simpler to use graphical interface.
The program is in English and may be difficult for the less experienced.
It has three options:
- File Type Settings to modify the context menus, descriptions and icons of the programs installed on the PC .
In another post I had already written about how to change the context menu of the right button for different types of files and Default Program Editor is another alternative to the tools already reported.
- Autoplay Settings to change the Autoplay menus .
This post is focused on this special feature of the Autoplay Settings because there are no other easier programs to make these changes.
Pressing on Autoplay Settings the list of possible Media usable in a computer appears: Blank CD disc, blank DVD, Audio CD, DVD film, photo, mixed content and others.
Practically you define, if you want, a predefined action when you insert a music CD or when you put a USB stick with files of different types inside.
You can also choose to start the Autorun in case you insert the CD of a program, to start the music automatically, to open the explorer in the case of a USB stick or even to do nothing in any case, thus disabling autoplay .
In addition, you can delete the entries that you do not want to see referring to external programs such as Picasa, Nero, Realplayer, iTunes or referring to poorly uninstalled programs.
Each action must be saved and there are two choices, to save the .reg file which will then be performed manually to apply the change or to save directly in the registry.
All these things can also be done from the AutoPlay configuration window in the Windows 7 Control Panel.
The added value of the program therefore lies in the possibility of being able to add a new action to the Autoplay menu, when a CD, DVD, USB stick, etc. is put.
By pressing the Add button you can choose from those already configured in Windows or add a new " Handler ", ie the start of a customized program.
In this case you have to give a name to the action and select the program by pressing the Browse button and browsing the Windows Explorer.
- The third option, Default program settings, is used to change the associations of the files with the predefined programs.
The choice of programs to open the various types of files, however, can be done directly from Windows and, in Windows 7 there is precisely the settings screen of the default programs in the Control Panel.
