Enable QoS (Quality of Service) on the router to enhance the internet

The quality of service, in English Quality of service abbreviated in QoS, is a function of the router that allows you to control how the bandwidth is divided between devices and applications .
When the network is congested by excessive Internet traffic, the quality of the service gives priority to certain types of traffic over others and allows the internet connection to work well without slowing down.
For example, suppose we have an Internet connection that is capable of transmitting data at 10 Mbps speed, if you are watching a movie on Netflix and at the same time you are downloading a big 40 Giga file, the internet bandwidth will be completely occupied .
In this situation, the router that manages Internet traffic will work by distributing the data according to the order of arrival of the packets: a Netflix data packet arrives and uploads it to the TV, while the download data packet is sent to the PC.
The router, however, can only manage a certain amount of data per second, therefore it must queue the packets going to slow down both Netflix and the download.
The quality of the QoS service allows the router to set priorities and therefore, for example, make Netflix work well by sacrificing only the file download speed.
Netflix data packets are never queued and are managed immediately.
Quality of Service is an excellent and little-known tool that allows you to train the router to divide the available bandwidth between the various applications.
Activating QoS on the router therefore means optimizing and enhancing the internet connection for those users where bandwidth intensive activities are carried out, for those who download a lot, for those who watch movies streaming in HD and those who play online.
Di can activate QoS on most routers by going to the configuration settings.
Simply access the router and look for the option that, depending on the brand and model of router used, can be more or less easy to configure.
The following can also benefit from the QoS function:
- Online games, decreasing latency and allowing you to play in multiplayer mode without delay.
- Improve the quality of videochat like Skype
- Improve the viewing quality of streaming movies (for example also from Netflix 4K).
- Minimize the impact on the connection of heavy downloads and Torrent clients
- Prioritize internet traffic on your PC over that of other devices.
Not all routers have the QoS function, although almost all newer ones should have it.
If you want to buy a new router, this is an essential function that must be present and be careful that it is the real one and not its simplest form.
In some routers, in fact, the QoS function is actually Wifi Multimedia or WMM, a single option that allows, when activated, to automatically detect audio and video streaming streams and give them priority.
In practice it is a QoS dedicated only to streaming that only works with Wifi.
The real QoS, however, is that which allows you to specify the applications to be given priority in the control of bandwidth, specifying maximum and minimum values, IP addresses and port ranges.
In some cases it can be complicated to configure, while in other more advanced routers they are user friendly, facilitated options.
You can find options to decide the interface priorities (the wifi or ethernet network card), service-level priorities (netflix or others), priorities at the IP address level and also at the Mac Address level .
If in doubt, if you find the quality of service option but don't know how to configure it, you can search the internet for specific guides for that model of router or leave a comment that we try together.
