Add page numbers to PDF and Documents

We have created a document on Word and we want to give it a professional look ">
From the drop-down menu that appears we can choose where to place the number of each page (top, bottom or margin) and also choose the format by clicking on the Format page numbers button. Alternatively we can insert the page numbers by going to the Insert menu, pressing on the Footer and clicking on Austin (the page numbers will be added at the bottom left, as on the books).

LibreOffice

If we do not have Microsoft Office installed on our computer and we do not need to purchase the license for Office, we can number the pages of Word documents (.doc and .docx) using the free LibreOffice suite. Download the suite, open the LibreOffice Writer program (the free Word equivalent), load the document to be modified, click on the Insert menu, press on Header and footer -> Footer -> Default style, then reopen the Insert menu -> Field command and press on Page number .

If instead we wanted to insert the total count of the pages on the document, just go to Insert -> Field command and press on Page count .

How to add page numbers to PDFs

If we receive a PDF document , numbering the pages could be a problem, since this document format is "finished" and it is not possible to change it quickly as seen with a Word document. Fortunately, some programs and sites are available that allow you to edit and number PDFs for free, so you can download them with the page numbers already available.

IlovePDF (Web)

The first service that we invite you to try is IlovePDF.

Once the site is open, simply click on Select PDF file, load the PDF document to be modified and proceed with the page numbering. In the edit window we can choose the position of the numbering, the type of margin and whether to apply the change only to the single page or to both sides.
At the end of the modification click on Add page numbers, then press on Download the numbered PDF to get our document with the correct pagination.

SodaPDF (Web)

Another site that we can use for free to number pages on PDFs is SodaPDF.

To proceed, load the document by dragging it into the window or using the Choose file button, then choose the pages to insert, the type of text, the format and the position of the numbers; at the end, select Add page numbers and wait for the automatic download of the new numbered PDF. Alternatively we can view the new document in the browser or send it via email to one of our contacts.

CutePDF Editor (Web)

A real complete PDF editor, usable without limits online, is CutePDF Editor.

After loading the PDF document on the page, scroll the right sidebar to Header & Footer, click on it and add the first number of the page, pressing on Footer at the top, entering the number in the desired position and by selecting the All pages item below.
After completing the changes, click on the top of Save to save a copy of the PDF document, so that we can send or share it.

A-PDF Number (Windows)

If instead of websites we want to use a program that is also available offline, we recommend trying A-PDF Number.

With A-PDF Number just open any PDF file (we can use the Browser button at the top) and then number the pages completely automatically. We can customize every aspect of the numbering, choosing whether to number all the pages, in what color to show the numbers, whether to show the Roman number and whether or not to insert the prefix. The numbering can then be positioned individually, in the bottom center, on the right, on the left.
At the end, once everything is configured, let's take a look at the preview and press the Process button to number the pages of the PDF, choose the destination folder and save the new file.

PDFFills Tools (Windows)

Another useful program for numbering pages of a PDF is PDFFill, a free PDF page editor, which in the Header & Footer function also has the ability to add numbers on pages.

To learn more about how to use this program, we advise you to read our guide on How to extract and reorder pages from a PDF, where we will also find other useful programs to modify and extract pages from PDFs.

Conclusions

Numbering pages on Word documents and PDF documents is relatively simple: with text documents just use the same Word or a free program like LibreOffice, while for PDF we strongly recommend using Web services, since they are extremely fast and fast. For those who like to use programs on the PC, tools are still available for working and editing PDFs, so as to add the necessary numbering.
If you are looking for a viable alternative to Adobe Reader to read PDFs, we recommend you read our article on Best alternatives to Adobe Acrobat Reader to read and open pdfs .
If the PDF is too large and you cannot send it by email, just use one of the sites or programs recommended in the guide on how to Compress PDF to reduce the file size and brilliantly solve any problem.
