If an app blocks the installation of the Windows 10 update

On my PC I had some difficulty updating Windows 10 to the latest version (in this case the Windows 10 May 2019 update) due to an error that said: " Your intervention is necessary ", without however indicating what it was this intervention (unfortunately I didn't save the original image in Italian and I can't find it)
A link in the error message led me to the support page on the Microsoft site, which explained what the error meant: the presence of an app blocks the installation of the update . As it is written on this page, there was no need to worry and we just had to wait for Microsoft to solve the problem to provide me with a risk-free update. But since I hate waiting for these things and since I wanted to understand what blocked the installation, I did a lot of research finally reaching a solution.
First of all, to resolve the error, I proceeded with updating the PC drivers (one of them may be the problem if very old) by installing the latest version. If you need help with this you can use programs to automatically update the drivers. Obviously this did not solve the problem.
As for the May update for Windows 10 1903, I was able to find out about an error caused by any USB sticks or SD cards in the computer. If this is the case, simply disconnect all the USB sticks and SD cards to resolve.
The error that the PC cannot be updated with the latest version of Windows 10 due to incompatible apps, on the other hand, is signed with the code 0xC1900209 and is one of the most frequent errors for updating Windows 10. When this error appears, sometimes it is written which apps block the installation of an update, but more often you are left with an empty message and without additional information.
To find out what software is on the PC that makes it impossible to install the Windows 10 update, as it was written in a guide on the official forum, you need to open a file that lists all the checks made in the procedure that verifies compatibility.
This file is found by opening a new folder and then going to the following path: C: \ $ Windows. ~ BT \ Sources \ Panther . Inside the folder you can search for the file that has the name APPRAISER_HumanReadable.xml . By opening this file you should look for a line written DT_ANY_FMC_BlockingApplication with Value = "TRUE" ; above the block containing this line, under the Asset section, there should be the name and the path of the Windows program or component causing the problem. In my case, even if after I actually discovered that the name of the guilty program was written, there was however the path where this program was located that I didn't even know was present on the computer.
To facilitate the search for the program incompatible with Windows 10, there is a tool that can be downloaded from this link . Then extract the AppRPS.zip file and launch the appraiser.bat file. The command prompt that opens will indicate the name of the file or program to be removed in order to install Windows 10.
In my case it was an Anti-Cheat software for video games called Battleye that I didn't know I had (it will have been included following the installation of some games on PC). Once I recognized it, I did a BattleEye search to find the folders in which to find the files to be deleted (which are C: \ Program Files (x86) \ Common Files \ BattlEye and C: \ Program Files (x86) \ BattlEye ). To clean up this software, I also had to remove the BattleEye-related service by opening a command prompt as an administrator and typing the command: sc delete BEService .
After this intervention I was able to update my PC with Windows 10 Update of May without problems. In the event that, however, you do not feel in a hurry to do this type of installation, you can be confident that Microsoft, before 6 months and before the next Update, will resolve these incompatibilities and make it possible to update the system with the latest version anyway .
