Enhance audio in videos with VLC

If we see movies or videos recorded on the computer, it is possible that the audio is not perfect, that it is low or that it has background noises.
If the sound is bad while watching a movie, you can improve the listening quality by using the audio enhancement and manipulation options included in the VLC Media Player program. As we know, VLC is the best program to view videos and movies on the computer because it supports every type of codec and video format, because it has many recording and conversion features and then also for its ability to optimize and improve the audio in the videos.

In VLC, the Audio options are accessible from the top menu, but that's not where you need to go to find the effects and the manipulation filters. Instead, you need to go to the Tools menu to find Effects and Filters, where you can fix the audio and activate the VLC equalizer and the Compressor ( DRC, Dynamic Range Compression ), useful for solving the problem of the distribution of background noise or low compressed volume. The other tools, Spatializer (to give surround sound spatiality) and Stereo Widener are less important.
In both instruments it is possible to drag the single sliders to adjust the audio, in order to improve listening to dialogues and sound effects of the videos and films that are to be seen. The dialogues will therefore be easier to listen to if they are too low, while the explosions, the shots or any loud noise will not make us jump from the chair.
While the equalizer has presets that you can always save and use, that of the compressor is a tool to be used while watching a specific video, so that you can find the optimal audio. Both tools must be activated by ticking the activation cursor.

VLC compressor levels

  • Compensation gain : allows you to increase the volume of the quietest scenes and is the most important level to use to optimize the audio. An optimal average value can be 12dB
  • Aspect Ratio : to set a maximum volume level beyond which you cannot go. The maximum 20.0: 1 sets the audio to maximum volume, automatically reducing sounds that exceed the Threshold .
  • Threshold : to keep the volume balanced and normalized, and to avoid it being too loud in certain noisier or screeching scenes. The Threshold is that level of amplitude of the audio signal beyond which the compressor is activated. A recommended Threshold level is -20 dB.
  • Attack, Release, Peak and Curvature are sliders that can be kept at the predefined levels, which are used to adjust the speed of the compression, that is when it must be activated while watching the film.

Equalizer levels

After activating the 10-band equalizer of VLC, you can use a preset from the drop-down menu on the right. There are several ready-made presets depending on the type of music you listen to. There are also two presets for listening to headphones and listening in the room. The equalizer is more useful when listening to music than when viewing a video or movie, but you can still try out the various presets to improve the audio in the videos.
