The end of Windows XP: what to do now and how to replace it?

Bad news (relatively) for owners of computers running Windows XP; Microsoft has announced that support for the most successful operating system ever will definitely end on April 8, 2014 .
This means that, from this moment of writing, one year is missing before Windows XP will finish being updated with patches to fix any security bugs.
The news really affects many computer users since, according to the latest statistics on the use of operating systems, Windows XP is still used by 38% of users around the world, second only to Windows 7 and significantly higher than Windows 8 which, at the moment, is only used by 4%.

It is obvious that Microsoft (not quite happy with the enormous success of the XP dean) wants all users and especially companies to switch to Windows 7 or, better yet, to Windows 8.
The company has recently launched a new offer for small and medium-sized enterprises that use older computers in order to update their systems and secure them from the risks related to the end of support that can have a devastating effect on the business.
For regular users, the prices of Windows 7 and Windows 8 are quite high and discouraging, unless you buy a new computer with the system already installed.
Personally, I think they can keep XP for a few more years, especially if you are using old and underpowered computers.
Who wants to upgrade to a system more similar to Windows XP, can certainly download Windows 7 with the automatic procedure that keeps all the data saved on the computer.
You can also keep XP until 2014 and then switch to Windows 8 which, in the meantime, will also be improved with new updates.

Another option, for those of Windows XP who appreciated its lightness, is the transition to Linux which becomes ideal for resurrecting those netbook or mini-pc computers like the old EEEPC.
